Pros
I started 16 months ago as a part time sales associate and now I'm about to get my own store. There are plenty of opportunities to move up the ladder if you're willing to put in the work.
Cons
As with any retail job, there are long hours and you always work holidays/weekends. Also, in higher volume stores such as mine, it's hard to find tme to keep up with operations as well as customer service simultaneously which can make the job stressful.
Advice to Senior Management
Autozone puts a huge focus on add-ons and package deals, however there is no incentive for the hourly staff to push these items other than to not get bothered by upper management. I think adding an incentive program of any form would raise moral and drive sales.
Pros
Good work environment
Good organizational culture
Fine work/personal life balance
The company is doing very good during these tough times.
Cons
Not many perks and benefits compared to elsewhere.
Lower salaries compared to other regions.
Pros
You will have a job. If your one of the few people working full time hours that is considered a full time employee you get crappy insurance. I wish there was more but there is not.
Cons
Very low pay, crazy schedule(close one day and open the next with split days off), severely understaffed and cooperate will not allow new hires, never get requested days off, if you complain then your fired.
Advice to Senior Management
I could write a book on what you are doing wrong. More pay, stop under staffing stores, regular schedules.... I could go on but you don't care!
Pros
Auto Zone is a great company to work for because they have integrity. They do what they say they will do.
Cons
Working at Auto Zone does not have a lot of cons, however you are expected to work a lot of weekends.
Advice to Senior Management
My advice to management would be offer tuition assistance programs for your employees who display high potential and career ambitions.
Pros
If you would like to excell and enjoy working with people and vehicles, AutoZone is all for you. Everything is very centered around customer service before bottom dollar.
Cons
If you have little patience with difficult people, this is definitely not the place for you. Ignorance and opinionation are staples in this business.
Advice to Senior Management
Offer better incentives for specific sales goals...other than that, I am paid for what I do, and will always do my best at that.
Pros
The company is a good company to work for.
Cons
The District and Store Managers at AZ do not offer proper training and they lack communication with the employees and customers.
Advice to Senior Management
The managers need more training and they should offer training to the employees for advancement within the company.
Pros
Better employees,pay rate and parts
Cons
Great workers tend to get over looked
Advice to Senior Management
Seems you dont get higher in the company unless someone know someone else
Pros
Was hired full time
My former boss was awesome and really cared about his employees and knew that to have a good work environment, u needed to feel wanted and appreciated for the work that u did everyday.
Was promoted to PSM 6 months after starting to work for Autozone
U also get to create a great rapport with customers who come in to the store or call and ask for u by name to help them
Cons
From doing this job for over a year, there seem to be way too many reports you have to keep up with (wittdtjr, oil w/ air, checkout challenge, LP Dashboard, selling time quiz, driver safety quiz, shrinkbuster training, PCI reports, MNDR reports, Average ticket reports, Comp reports, Hub store order reports, Sweep Lane reports, Overstock reports, Planogram reports, etc)
Planograms change weekly and many of them are what are called "refreshed" - meaning that they are moved around to entice customers to shop that specific area.
My biggest complaint out of all of this is :
There is a paper hanging up in the managers office from corporate that plainly reads "Autozoners are our greatest asset".
If that were true, then why is it that we arent treated like an asset?
There is no loyalty between the company or the associates.
To get any information from a District Manager, you have to beg for it. For a company that is making more money each and every year than the previous year, we should have more technology, more communication, more promotions, and less red tape
Advice to Senior Management
I would like for someone from corporate to come in and work with a store for a month, and report back to the board meetings what they had seen and what they have encountered and change the way we do business. We are losing too many quality people to competitors due to the way we are told to do more than ever before but we arent going to pay you to take on the extra workload. The workers feel so disenfranchised to the point that they will work for different companies just to feel appreciated.
Pros
- Good employees
-Pay is okay, but it is hard to get raises
- somewhat flexible schedule
- overall its just "okay"
Cons
- Not enough people working at one time
- no benefits
- not full time unless your a member of management
- work weekends and holidays
- no incentive to push products
Advice to Senior Management
Come up with an incentive program to push the check out challenge and other promotions. Also make sure that each store is always stocked with enough promotion product
Pros
Given the number of Auto Zone locations around the country, chances are there is one that is close by so the commute to work isn't all that bad. The hours of operation are within reason, so long as your not working from open to close. I would say that the best reason to work for Auto Zone would be the on going training and the help in becoming ASE certified, even though there is no real incentive to do so other than self-satisfaction and the desire to better one's self.
Cons
I think the biggest downside of working at Auto Zone is the fact that there are too many store level managers with an upper management that oftentimes has a different agenda than that at the store level. There is almost no accountability at any level. The management staff is well trained in micro-management techniques as far as additional sales and profit percentages, but unfortunately has no clue how to deal with the day to day human resource areas of the store. The communication and application of company policies is subjective at best.
Advice to Senior Management
Some advice to the leadership of Auto Zone:
1. Apply the policies of the company evenly & fairly.
2. Improve the level of accountability at all levels, from regular employees all the way up the management team.
3. Listen and act on what your team members are telling you when it comes to identifying a problem area.
4. Make sure that your regional HR managers are familiar with the labor laws for each and every state in which they have employees.
5. Pay attention to attrition rates in areas, this is usually an indication of an upper management person or team that has gotten off course.
