I worked at AutoZone full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work environment. Company really takes care of its people. If you get a down to earth manager, life is good.

    Cons

Down to earth managers are far and few between. They want you to sell more parts with less people, less hours, and less availability than the competition. They cut hours when rain is in the forecast which hurts moral, especially when slower sales times could mean catching up operationally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire district managers with business sense and people skills. If you need to pay them a bit more it would be worth it in the long run.

    Pros

As much overtime as you would want, decent pay, flexible hours, and great benefits.

    Cons

Opportunity for growth were rare and a lot of micromanagement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide positive feedback to associates instead of just negative feedback.

Former Employee - Parts Sales Manager in Buffalo, NY
Former Employee - Parts Sales Manager in Buffalo, NY

I worked at AutoZone full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As much over time as you can handle
When your coworkers actually show up to work they are generally pleasant people to work with.

    Cons

More over time then you can handle.
No staff at the busiest store in the district
None of the registers work right
    No communication

When you try talk to upper management about a problem and need advice they have no idea what to do.

When they send large planograms in the parts department they are done completely wrong and not even spaced correctly.

They cut the hours until you have no coverage and then make management cover all the extra shifts.

They hired us a driver who didn't have a license.

The store in the city need armed security because the computers loose warranties and the customers tend to become violent.

Racist commercial customers are defended by the district manager as though that's accepted behavior.

When you take an extra day off cause you're sick or have an emergency you are questioned about it like you are a criminal in an intarogation booth.

If you happen to know a customer and upper management finds out you might be questioned by loss prevention and maybe even fired as a thief even if you didn't do anything wrong.

Management has a thing for trash bags, if you close and forget a single bag you will probably be written up and treated like you're worthless.

To summarize if you like being abused my your boss and your customers this is the job for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop abusing your lower and middle management, try to communicate what's actually going on, and maybe hire some staff. Pay and promote instead of just making one guy do his bosses job after you fire or move them out of the store with less then a thank you.

I worked at AutoZone (more than 3 years)

    Pros

NONE......nothing at all is even decent about this evil corporation

    Cons

Super long hours.....Store managers are abused by being given unrealistic payroll hrs which forces them to come in your day off. Inventory's at sister stores are all scheduled on Managers day off = FREE LABOR. SM's have 0 say in anything that happens in the store. TERRIBLE PAY

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work the counter for 12 -15 hrs for a day ....see how you feel about the company then.

I have been working at AutoZone

    Pros

20 percent discount, Opportunity to learn about the automotive industry.

    Cons

Too many to list, they tell you when hiring you that they promote from within but routinely hire from outside for positions above you. The yearly raises are a complete joke. They care nothing about your personal schedule, if something comes up and you need to be off one particular night a week just temporarily you are told "too bad, no exceptions." The primary concern of upper management are the shareholders, nothing else matters. I still work for this company and get 20 percent off and wont spend a dime there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try thinking of something other than putting money in the pockets of investors, and stop lying to prospective employees and promote from within. Try paying a decent wage also, and give REAL raises.

I have been working at AutoZone part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

20% discount on most everything save for special orders and anything already on sale.
    Flexible scheduling.
    Regular customers are very friendly.
Decent training & learning from skilled coworkers.

    Cons

Full time does not exist for anyone other than manager positions to avoid health care costs.
Very underpaid for such important skill sets and free services
Upward mobility depends entirely on your boss' boss who often will just shuffle around other managers to compensate for an open position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give an honest effort to provide some sort of incentive to the meager part time employees that you harp at to meet sales quotas for your own personal quarterly bonus that no one else benefits from.
