    Autodesk Consulting-Mixed Bag

    Project Manager (Current Employee)

ProsAs a project manager in the Autodesk consulting world, there are many benefits....good pay, good benefits, work from home, significant autonomy

ConsIncreasingly regimented, corporatized, and micromanaged. Departments are disjointed and have different goals, and working with the distributed virtual teams is challenging. Work-life balance can be a real challenge, it is an endless pit of work and one rarely seems to feel caught up.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore personal time talking to and providing encouragement to virtual employees who are doing a good job to motivate them. Also, listen to front line employees. Too many layers of management. The plants (people) need to be watered with praise in addition to constructive feedback.

    Autodesk means well....

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Rafael, CA

ProsReally great and smart people. It is a very respectful environment. Established and good employee programs - benefits etc. Some locations are very cool - Market Street, Pier 9, .Tel Aviv.
it is an organization that values people, is respectful and wants to succeed.
Working hard in some orgs to transform the business - feels like pushing a boulder up the hill.
Some leaders are great and some are so weak it is almost a joke.

ConsPolitical, allows people to float through the company, not great at bringing in new talent. CEO team is too engrained in the past - they are invested in the status quo. Not incented to do anything innovative.
Carl Bass is smart and a great technical leader. They need a true visionary with some energy as CEO.
No vision in the CTO org....it is more of a playground. How does that translate into important innovation or revenue.
Pier 9 really?? spend millions and cannot hire new talent because there is not budget?....come on.....

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are living in the most forward thinking technology geographic area in the world. You have an older org....nice and stable and stable. In comparison to your talent rivals you are a bit boring. too policy driven. While it is great you want to be fair to all employees - it is OK if one site is different from another. You can give hot dogs at lunch in Toronto (as an example I don't think they want hot dogs in Toronto) and not give them in Montreal! we are not a socialist nation.
Reward wildly....give the high performers exceptional and delightful rewards! Make them want to stay and innovate. Quit rewarding mediocre employees.
AND - change out some Sr leaders....yes you - on the CEO staff and others....shake it up. You brag about going through a transformation with the same leadership team - maybe not a good idea....?
too concerned about the street and the reaction to our business.....my gosh take a chance! how can you ask your employees to be creative when you are not? Create some energy and have some fun.
Hire someone to lead engineering - stop the conflicting goals of the divisions.....do you know the angst it causes and the wasted resources???? open your eyes Carl.

    Stay Focused

    Product Manager (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat products, very diverse portfolio of design software. Company is a survivor of multiple disruptions over the past 30 years. Loyal customers altho some don't have a choice.

ConsEasily distracted, subject to "shiny object syndrome" making it difficult to follow through on key initiatives. Company has grown slowly relative to other ISV's in similar segment such as Adobe.

Advice to Senior ManagementISM really needs to be re-thought. A360 branding remains confusing, value needs to be evident.

    Great place to work

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsGood pay, good work-life balance, good location.

ConsYou context switch onto different projects frequently, so you wont be able to specialize into being an expert in a given area. You are on a one year release cycle, expect to work on features only to have them scoped out later.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring back beer bash's. Minimize re-branding company divisions so frequently.

ProsLots of bright people, solid compensation.

ConsSan Rafael is pretty isolated. Also, I have never worked in a company where the interpersonal relationships were so critical to success. It is a Con if you are not able to be seen to be on the team with the right people.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company is doing well. I think it would do better if decisions were based more on data and analytics than relationships.

    Good Company doing Good Work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsSmart people. Low office politics. Leadership is smart and caring overall. Feels like high integrity place, focused on the right things: having the right business model, growing the business, making customers successful and creating a compelling culture and work environment for employees. Vision: helping people imagine, design and create a better world.

ConsLike many companies that are engineering based, whether you get the right resources and support is dependent upon which group you work in. If you're in a product group, you will likely get more; support area, a lot less. The CEO is smart and knows the business, but he also has a brusque no-nonsense and often unnecessarily "rough around the edges" style that can be intimidating and not invite people to give open feedback. This can contribute to an "Emperor wearing no clothes" situation where even senior leaders don't challenge the CEO. Anytime you have that dynamic, you are shortchanging the culture, the best ideas and people's ability to really do their best.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more senior leaders from outside the company who can stand up to the CEO. Get the CEO to modify his leadership style to listen more and invite differing views, be more respectful. Promote/hire more women in senior roles (male dominated leadership team creates limited views and re-enforces old world approaches that are rapidly becoming outdated. Loosen up compensation budgets so people make more than 2-3% a year in merit increases.
