I have been working at Avalon Flooring full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, beautiful showrooms and huge inventories.

    Cons

They tell you that you'll make $60,000 to $80,000. You won't. The 1st year you'll make under $40,000. If you can afford to live on that little and hang in you might make $60,000 after being there 5 years. The work load is enormous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase commissions or base pay or you won't be able to keep employees.

I have been working at Avalon Flooring

    Pros

Decent benefits, promotes healthy lifestyles through gym incentive programs and offers wellness screenings.

    Cons

Long days. Pure commission sales structure, after your initial 6-8 month "grace" period you will be expected to cover a "draw" determined by your projected success. (imagine 30-35,000 to start) You will be over promised the amount of money that is available to be made without a strong builder business backing (I was told 70-80,000)

The day-to-day business is pretty cut throat and the customers are not walking in the door the way they were projected to be. Strong training program to back you; however, unless you have a strong passion for floors or lots of construction/builder friends you will stick around the 35,000 number until you leave.

Don't expect your work to be rewarded, you will be consistently asked to perform at a higher level and there is little to no

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a strong boys-club mentality at work here. I would consider this as an entry level sales job and hire as such. Also, probably get rid of the "This Is NOT The Club You Want to Be In" emails...

I have been working at Avalon Flooring full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great opportunities; friendly co-workers; good management techniques; great benefits; high amount of sales opportunities; lots of opportunities for spiff; great training program.

    Cons

High degree of favoritism; bad eggs never go away; long hours for little pay; time spent at ones desk for customer follow-up not seen as favorable; negative reinforcement used to motivate, rather than positive reinforcement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Those who are at fault need to take responsibility. The sales person is not to blame for every scenario, and to be treated as a scapegoat. If there is a problem, it needs to be addressed; purchasing and higher level management need to stop pointing the finger and accept responsibility.

    Pros

The job is not terribly difficult if you are comfortable with running reports, typing and other miscellaneous tasks.

    Cons

Unless you are willing to go the route of a salesperson it is difficult to get to the point where you make "great" money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are not only interested in Avalon supporting women related charities. The company seems somewhat sexist in that regard, though it is positive to see the company wanting to give women an equal opportunity for advancement within the company as well as support them outside.

Could be a good place to work

    I worked at Avalon Flooring

    Pros

Great selection of products. Compared to some other retail I've worked at they use technology somewhat effectively.

    Cons

Unless you are an outside sales type or a telemarketer you won't do well here. Plan on 'scouting' and going out to find your own customers. The floors are flooded with people, the advertising is inadequate, the hours are long, and management is by threat and punishment. They have it know that most of their salespeople won't succeed. If they budget a store for 500k, and have 10 salespeople all budgeted for 70k, what result do they actually expect? They are either very bad at math, don't care, or are deluded. Have a couple of bad months in a row and you will be threatened regardless of your previous history. To top it all off there is rampant favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Store management is fine for the most part. At the lower levels you mostly have a bunch of people trying I do a job that is not made easy by the "Ivory Tower" types in the corporate office. Corporate needs to listen to their people in the field and stop running the entire company like Whatever works for the Cherry Hill store will work for every other location.

I have been working at Avalon Flooring full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Overall happy to go to work everyday and experience new customers and help an existing customer with new projects. Workplace hectic at times; but I prefer to be busy and feel needed. Busy means you are making money! I have been working for Avalon Flooring for six years and the benefits are great! I work with a group of friendly and positive people and have made some best friends over the past six years.

    Cons

Scheduled hours can be hard on your personal life. Must have great organizational skills. Organization is not a Con.
