I have been working at Avamere Family of Companies full-time

    Pros

Decent starting pay, paid time off, fair overtime/holiday pay.. Many individual staff are pleasant and caring people.

    Cons

Even back on my very first day of orientation nursing was so understaffed we were at almost double the legal minimum ratio for CNAs. Most staff are burnt out and unfriendly. I had been hired as a not yet certified CNA and yet was not even properly oriented at all, more of a "you go do this and I'll do that" sort of thing within an hour of my first shift. Nursing staff are for the most part individually caring people but do not have time to provide even remotely adequate patient care to all patients. Residents are left on the toilet for a half an hour routinely because people will leave to go answer other call lights with the intent of coming right back, and no one else is available to help. Management has no clear idea of what they are doing and overtime is borderline forced consistently while staff is told "work smarter, not harder" to solve the understaffed problem. Staff is jumping ship left and right and has been consistently since I have worked there. Not a good place to work for a CNA who actually wants to do their job correctly. Bad medical benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your staff half decently to begin with and they may stick around. Having a beautiful building isn't enough, you need to hire more staff to provide even the most basic level of acceptable patient care. Actually enforce some sort of orientation/training program, you are putting residents and yourselves at a HUGE risk letting newbies off on their own. Quit the illegal practices and get your priorities in a row, if the staff don't have time for the residents no one can do their job and no one is fulfilled.

    Pros

Company is on the rise and has plans to grow, and grow quickly. The opportunity to move up is a large upside.

    Cons

Young company, almost get the feeling they are growing too fast for their own good. Corporate office is completely out of touch with what happens at the front lines. Corporate office gives you the sense that they are finding new things and policies to implement to justify their jobs.

I worked at Avamere Family of Companies full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Training for nursing position is 3 to 60 days depending on staffing needs. Nice environment with many upgrades to building. Co-workers are great. Very flexible with time off.

    Cons

Management constantly changing and and protocols unclear. Wages may compare at date of hire but only increase 1.2-1.5% yearly if you request a review. Schedules, benefits and job requirements change without notice. "Seniority" means nothing except being held to perform at a higher level than new hires, often while making the same or less $$.

I worked at Avamere Family of Companies full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are no pros working for this company.

    Cons

They use a business model that doesn't work. One licensed nurse for an average of 22 patients. A med tech to administer the medications. An average of 1 maybe 2 cna's per hall. They are so understaffed with nurses that people stay after their shift, usually 2-3 hours to complete their paperwork and charting. It's impossible to get all the work done that is assigned in a12-shift. They only work 12 hour shifts for the nurses because they don't pay over time. So staying after to complete the paperwork keeps the staff within 40 hours. The people that work there have for years and they have a work routine and anything that interrupts that creates a panic. I worked with one nurse who got her first meal break at 4:30 p.m. They lock up all the office supplies. There are none to be found at any of the nurses' desks. They do not pay the standard in the industry, as well as, no shift incentives. The nurses that I worked with kept saying "you just get use to it". You are given 3-4 days of orientation. It is micro managed which leads to an authoritative style of management. They are constantly putting out fires because of the lack of staff which leads to mistakes. Multiple med errors and complaints from the patients. This is the worst place I have ever worked. If you don't believe me look up their health rating. They are 2 - 21/2 times higher than other places. There rating is 11. The smaller the number the better. I would not recommend employment to anyone or placement of a loved one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to take their suit & tie off and work the floor to see what is really going on. They sit behind a desk and have no clue. The management in the building have a clue but they can't do anything about it. The bottom line is always financial. There is no money in health care and it shows up in their lack of staff. With all the studies that have been done on stress and the illness that it brings they do not support the health of their employees by the way they overwork them. In China these companies are called sweat shops. In the United States it's normal.

I have been working at Avamere Family of Companies full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great residents. Good location. Vending machine in break room. Satisfactory amount of lockers. Comfortable furniture for breaks. Majority of floor staff is easy to work with.

    Cons

Management doesn't listen to employee complaints or suggestions. Some employees receive preferential treatment. Urine soaked clothing and bedding is left in resident rooms for hours at a time. Site is unsecured - doors are left propped open or do not lock correctly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Practice "integrity above all else" instead of just saying it. Treat all employees fairly and with respect.
