    Pros

I have a lot of great coworkers. It is a safe environment. You are helping others while you work.

    Cons

For some people, shift work is a problem (I don't mind it)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you stay connected to your workforce.

    Pros

Great benefits; wonderful chance for advancement; great supervisors

    Cons

Upper management should become more involved with day to day operations of the clinics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become more involved with the actual clinics

I have been working at Avera McKennan Hospital full-time

    Pros

Hours/days, benefits, supervisors are readily available if you need help, majority of coworkers are easy to get along with but there's always that one person...

    Cons

Using PTO for "paid" holidays, overtime not allowed, too many meetings, filing, a lot of filing, reports, reports, reports

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't have any. They are all friendly & willing to help if your supervisor is not in. Their doors are literally always open.

I worked at Avera McKennan Hospital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I absolutely loved the people I worked with. It made everything worth it. We worked well together on our unit.

    Cons

I found that I never got off of work on time. With 6 patients overnight, many times we would have to stay and catch up on something. Some mornings we would also have to give report to 4 or 5 different nurses, so it always ended up going late. Also, if there were fewer patients for each nurse I know we could get to know their stories better.

    Pros

They treat their employees fairly well. There is a lot of focus on teamwork and employee satisfaction. Overall, nice place to work.

    Cons

Some feel that management is not always open with them. I haven't seen this myself. Some staffing issues, so people are needed to pick up extra shifts.

I have been working at Avera McKennan Hospital

    Pros

Life/work balance is very seen as very important. Avera does not have a "revolving door" like the other institution in town has. Avera also promotes from within, but does not hesitate to go outside to find the talent necessary to move the organization forward.

    Cons

Depends on who your direct line boss is...there are a few "holier than thou" attitudes that run rampant in certain depts. The HR dept is a little overzealous in trying to keep compensation down by offering wages that seem to be a bit low in comparison to similar size organizations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There seems to be a disconnect between the upper management and the staff. We need to find a way to bridge that gap and make sure that the voices of the "little" people are heard as well.

I worked at Avera McKennan Hospital

    Pros

90% of the people I made contact with were a pleasure to work with

    Cons

High expectations for PRN employees to keep up with a constantly changing health care system

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find an alternative communication method to keep less actively working employees informed

  9.

The standard of practice was met. But standard practice is disappointing.

I worked at Avera McKennan Hospital full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Potential to be a 5 star place to work.

    Cons

Flying by the seat of their pants, and growing too fast. Failure to step back and plan, implies they are planning for failure or mediocrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local administrative management sets the tone of the facility, and the tone that was set was negative.

I have been working at Avera McKennan Hospital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great leadership and training. Many opportunities to move up.

    Cons

Tough economic environment for health care right now. Many budget cuts and "Lean" programs to save money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk straight to your employees about the money situations facing health care providers. Let them know that their jobs may be on the line if they don't do their part and shape up!

I have been working at Avera McKennan Hospital

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good for this area.

    Cons

It is small enough that how employees are treated are not always equal. Some supervisors are personal friends with other staff they are supposed to be managing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want patients to "always" be happy with their care and our customer service, staffing needs to be adjusted.
