The people who work here are truly gifted...

    Engineer (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsThe new office space is great! It's a great combination of modern office with old industry...

The people working here are truly gifted. There are many smart, hard working people here who love their jobs and love seeing the company succeed. It's the people who make the company and all the people working here are great.

ConsCons? The commute. It can be rough at times, but once you're through the usual Pittsburgh bottlenecks it's pretty easy.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing your best to keep morale and energy of the company up. You are great at what you do, just don't let it get stale...

A privilege to be part of this team!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsAn amazing team working on innovative new technology to change the storage industry. A Transparent management team with tremendous experience and leadership.

ConsIt's a lot of hard work, but I knew this going in. You can't create a new technology and change an industry without sacrifice. The hours can be long at times, but every employee plays a critical role in our success.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to be transparent with your employees and customers and we will be successful.

Industry changing product and an excellent group of engineers

Member of Technical Staff (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsAs a software developer, it is very exciting to be part of a team developing something that is going to change the landscape of the storage industry. The tools and techniques used to develop software is very cutting-edge, and it is always enlightening to work with a team of *nix wizards and learn some kernel internals or some advanced C++ feature from a colleague.
Besides that, the free lunches, breakfast, and drinks and frequent social events are always refreshing.

ConsIt may sometimes be difficult to maintain a work-life balance, but this is more due to personal time management issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work.

VP of Sales replaced and VP of Engineering replaced in 2013.

    Developer (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsSmart People, working with some legends of the NFS stack, Beautiful new facilities, Good sense of camaraderie in the office with my fellow employees, very charismatic CEO. Forward thinking development workflow.

ConsTrying to do introduce too many additional feature sets without adequate QA, Contentious atmosphere with habitual yelling fits by management, unfortunate dynamic developing within the management structure, Pittsburgh, extraordinary amount of red tape for a small company, overburdened and overstretched customer support organization. Bottom line, Avere had produced a very interesting product that is fun to help build. Unfortunately, they have not found an adequate market for it.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are doing too many things at the same time. This means you are doing none of them very, very well.

The Next Big Thing in Storage!

    Marketing (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsIf you want to be part of a team pushing the envelope in bringing new technology to market, this is the company for you. Like most good tech start-ups, Avere has a fast-paced development cycle that doesn't get bogged down in minutiae or politics.
The engineering team is top-notch and most have done this before. In addition, this is the founding CEO's third company, so not only is he not learning the ropes of building a company, but is passionate about the technology as well.
Company and team is well respected in the storage industry and has the backing of Silicon Valley VCs, a rarity in Pittsburgh.

ConsDon't expect a glamorous facility, company HQ is located in suburban office building that has basic office decor with no frills.
It's a start-up, so if you can't or won't put maximum effort into your work, this would not be the environment for you (nor good for the company).
Company provides tons of free junk food/snacks - the breakroom looks like you stumbled into a convenience store. So if you like to eat healthy, you have to bring your own.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs the company continues to grow, make sure that the culture remains that of a start-up

In 30+ years in Information Technology, never employed less than 5 years, this is one of the best companies I worked at.

    Director (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

Pros1. Strong management team, financial backing
    2. Advanced & proven technology
    3. Strong, executable business plan
    4. Demonstrated results
    5. Brand name satisfied customer base
    6. Professional, A level team

ConsAs with all early stage companies, the size of the sales force and ability to maximize the market window in time is always of concern. The economy for storage is strong but with acquisitions of mid-size companies by the tier 1 companies left a hole for the channel to make acceptable margins. The hole is slow to fill but new companies.

Advice to Senior ManagementStick to the plan, it is working. Maximize cash flow.

Clueless upper management bungling the creation of promising technology

Member of Technical Staff (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

Pros- Engineering team (non-management) is top-rate
    - All-Mac environment makes working easier
    - Office is located in the suburbs in a heavily retail/restaurant area--lots of places for lunch (if you dare take it)

Cons- No work flexibility (working from home) or work/life balance. Even though all employees have MacBook Pros, you MUST be at the office to be considered "working."
    - NO real communication among different engineering teams; VP of Engineering is terse and offputting
    - Relatively low salaries in exchange for stock options that might easily turn out to be worthless
    - Managers monitor the hours you spend at your office desk, not your contributions or achievements
    - Marketing seems to have an unlimited budget for every boondoggle
    - Financials are concealed just enough to make employees feel okay about them, but a company that intended to go public after a Series A is now seeking a Series C

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more open & transparent internally about financials--it's obvious that at this point you're looking to be acquired. Don't work your staff like slaves. If a staff member gets sick, have HR talk to them about alternative working arrangements, STD, FMLA, etc., instead of "laying them off."

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
