Useful but unentertaining

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Avnet part-time for more than a year

ProsSolid company, established, plenty of people worked hard to keep me busy and find more opportunities for me to grow in my skills and career.

Cons99% of Avnet workers in the US are over 40, and the office space is essentially a cubical farm. You won't be making a lot of friends if you're a 20-something.

Not employee friendly

Receptionist (Former Employee)
Tempe, AZ

I worked at Avnet full-time for more than a year

ProsIt was a good entry job.

ConsI had no chance for advancement. I tried to apply for other positions but my direct manager wouldn't recommend me because I was 'doing such a great job, she didn't want to lose me.' Sorry, it wasn't my dream to be a receptionist forever.

Former Administrative Assistant to VP

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
Richardson, TX

I worked at Avnet full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe company offers good benefits and an excellent working environment. They allow you to work without micro managing. The pay scale is good.

ConsThey are always looking for ways to cut back and cut overhead. There isn't any long term job security anymore. Upper management has changed and it is not the same company it used to be. You are not guaranteed a permanent position.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate your employees.

Glad I am out of there, I would never return....

Contracts Manager (Former Employee)
Phoenix, AZ

I worked at Avnet full-time for more than a year

Prosno pros, management needs up to date management skills.

ConsWhy retain an intern if you know a layoff is coming. Last one in, first one out is their layoff process. Unethical to fool people making them believe they will be an employee when in reality they know it will not be possible.

Not a good place to build a career

SSR (Former Employee)
Broomfield, CO

I worked at Avnet full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat coworkers in the trenches, above average CEO leadership with Rick Hamada, and a company funded pension plan.

ConsManagement can't be trusted-dishonesty and favoritism are huge issues here. Completely unattainable quotas lead to constant layoffs and career growth is extremely limited (unless you are OK with moving to Arizona). Even if you do succeed, there are caps to commissions that do not reward you for exceptional performance. More workload, longer hours, and worse year over year pay were the norm here. Avnet will do everything imaginable to limit your earning potential, and it shows in the rock bottom morale among its employees. The only thing keeping most Avnet employees in Colorado going is their base salary from when they were GE employees-and the fact that the job market is awful. If you value a steady paycheck over building a career and are OK with working long hours on salary (overtime for hourly employees is limited) with very poor commission earning potential, this is the company for you. Avnet does offer a good opportunity to learn the business and build relationships before you move on to a company that will pay you for success and reward you with opportunity for career advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe honest with your employees, start taking career development seriously, and provide a legitimate commission plan that rewards employees who earn.
