I worked at Avnet full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

People were nice and I had a great manager while I was there. The benefits and compensation were good. Very large company.

    Cons

Company culture is slow moving when it comes to change. Not a good place to work if you are entrepreneurial. Definitely a good ol' boys club that is carrying a lot of dead weight even after many lay offs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Even though Innovation is a core value on paper, the company needs to mean it.

I worked at Avnet full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large corporation with many on going activities. The work is constantly changing and you will be interacting with many different people with varying skillsets

    Cons

Silos, this company is very compartmentalized and straying from the core skill set you are hired for is frowned upon. This is a large company and core changes happen at a slow pace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management will tell you how proud of their fortune 500 standing. It my be time to get Avnet on the lists of most Honest or Ethicial companies.

    Pros

Co-workers are the best reason to join. If you're able to work with a great manager it makes all the difference.

    Cons

Since this is such a large company, it takes a very long time for certain issues to be addressed or approval for various projects.

    Pros

The staff are very cooperative - good people.

    Cons

The politics of upper management - everyone is in a CYA mode due to ongoing layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work for a better today and tomorrow, not worrying about just yourselves.

I have been working at Avnet full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    They have a pension
Good sick time (evergreen) and disability benefits
[For my particular job] the commute is good - I work from home
They reimburse a portion of your cell and internet bills
Tuition reimbursement (predicated upon successful completion of the class with a minimum grade, and it being related to your career, and it being preapproved form your management chain)
    Adoption assistance

    Cons

    Crappy vacation policies
    Mediocre management
    No direction for the future
    Limited career paths
    Very little training
    Constant reorganization
    No 401(k) matching
    Mediocre health plan offerings

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't reimburse our phones, take care of them the way you do our laptops.

Improve the lousy vacation policies - 2 weeks to start for professionals doing highly-demanding technical work? That's what I would expect from an entry-level manufacturing job, not a reputable technology company. Look at the highly-successful non-accrual-based policies in the rest of the industry: if you don't trust us not to take too much time off, you need to get better employees.

Get your employees trained: learning on our own as and when we can is highly ineffective - pay for us to take classes related to our jobs.

As it is, Avnet is merely a "resume builder" if you're there.

I have been working at Avnet full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

stock shares bonuses are available for those who have proven their worth in the past. not sure about present conditions to get into this group..

    Cons

Arrogant leadership. This company used to actually care about employees but is all about right-sizing now. Hanging on to the bloated salary's for useless top echelon members and continuing the layoffs of the good people who are making the money for the company. Internal training has been completed hollowed out and means nothing anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Right-size the directors, VPs, SVPs and Presidents instead of the useful people

    Pros

    The camaraderie amongst the troops...

    Cons

...the camaraderie is due to a consensus disregard for management. Good employees keep getting let go while the mid level management pool just keeps growing - is management not accountable for poor performance???

I worked at Avnet full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It was a good entry job.

    Cons

I had no chance for advancement. I tried to apply for other positions but my direct manager wouldn't recommend me because I was 'doing such a great job, she didn't want to lose me.' Sorry, it wasn't my dream to be a receptionist forever.
