I have been working at Avon Products full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company pays well. You will get to work with lot of challenges. Since the recent layoffs, they company is trying to turn around. This has overloaded certain employees

    Cons

Recent restructuring is causing employees not to trust the company any more. They are feeling very insecure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rework on benefits.

    Pros

People in the trenches had tremendous pride and belief in the company. Onsite consultants, off-shoring, and several rounds of layoffs have destroyed its' very foundation.

    Cons

Long term employees undervalued, laid off to avoid pension benefits. Morale is at an all time low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach. Go back to the roots of what originally made Avon a great place to work.

    Pros

Most associates in the rank and file are great to work with. The company values are meaningful.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't have a strategy. Too much time and money is spent atoning for sins of past upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop asking management consultants what to do. Look inside your collective hearts and create a plan for transformation. Then boldly follow that plan!

    Pros

Some really great people to work with, pay OK

    Cons

The company slogan "The Company for Women" has resulted in too many unqualified and inexperienced women in various positions, especially management. On the other hand the men of the in-house Sopranos gang (anyone who has worked in Rye knows what this means) make IT decisions for reasons other than what is best for the company. My lasting impression is of the former CEO being a disciple of Jack Welch who preaches "cut till it shows", maybe that was good for GE but most companies cannot survive when the remaining workforce has one person doing what three used to... I'm not at all surprised at their troubles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read the cons, do something about it without perpetuating it.

I worked at Avon Products full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Avon, at least in Rye, has a family oriented atmosphere. The people are great and helpful. I only worked there a year but wish it was longer. Pay decent, benefits ok. Great work life balance. Great culture.

    Cons

We all know Avon's issues, so I will not list them here. Upper management is in the middle of a complete restructure. Half of the IT staff, including myself, was let go. There was no rhyme or reason given as to why people were let go. Direction is unclear, as there are rumors of mergers. One of the worst parts of Avon was how unorganized some of their projects can be. How projects are funded make no sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more forthcoming to employees of what you are trying to do. No one seems to have a clue what is happening or is going to happen.

I have been working at Avon Products full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

in 2014, Avon Products is extremely political. If you have the "right" boss, or if you are "liked;" then, Avon could be a very nice and richly rewarding place to work; you could have a relatively light work load for corporate America today; excellent pay (decent benefits); opportunity for travel if you want it; opportunity for training if you want it; opportunity for rapid advancement; and you could be remunerated, compensated, and appreciated for your work. Helping Representatives make a living could make you feel good inside about what you do for a living. You could feel empowered.

    Cons

in 2014, Avon is extremely political. A former CEO stated that she believed "Emotional Intelligence" was the key attribute of any employee; and she hired/fired/promoted based on that concept to the exclusion of all other measures of performance. In 2014, most managers still have that deeply ingrained; every manager at Avon will seem to be nice (that's how they got there!); but many are primarily focused on appearing to be nice; not on their jobs or their jobs, or their direct reports, the future, or the Representatives. Some employees are amazingly bad at their actual "job," which can be very frustrating to coworkers who have to pick up the slack. If you have the "wrong" boss, or if you are not "liked," then Avon could be a hellish place to work; heavy work load even by current American corporate standards; low pay (but still average benefits); no opportunity for travel (unless you really hate travel); no opportunity for training no matter how badly you or your direct reports need it; zero chance for advancement; and others will be richly rewarded for your work (while you are punished for the mistakes of others). Also, at Avon; if manager x does something wrong and you report them to manager y; you may discover that manager x is, some how, related to manager y; and you will be the one who gets punished. It can be a very strange place to work, and it's very sad to see so many people playing mind games rather than working, because it's wrecking the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Fire anyone who was hired or promoted when that former CEO was there; fire their buddies who are still working at Avon.
    2. Promote everyone who was passed over for promotion when the former CEO was there; try to hire back everyone forced out by the former CEO; (or forced out by the former CEO's buddies).
    3. Bring back and enforce the official corporate standards. The current effective corporate culture of lying, cheating, dishonesty, secrecy, and meanness must go if the company is to thrive.
