I have been working at BAE Systems Electronics & Integrated Solutions
Pros – In a tight job market it is a shelter from the storm
Cons – Low Pay, engineers are treated as interchangeable parts, no recognition of talent, possibly because the management doesn't believe that talent would work here.
Rumours of the plant closing is supported by the relocation of projects to other locations, while the local managers try to sell us a vision of sunshine and rainbows, while requiring unpaid OT.
Advice to Senior Management – To all the managers waiting for their retirement; having your employees hear about plant cutbacks from the newspapers is not the way to do things. You've lost credibility and you won't need to fire anyone if the economy improves.

Pros – Very good people work here, a diverse workforce. There is currently a good worker age mix from the 20;s to the 60's and they work well together. The work has been suited to me and satisfying.
Cons – Unfortunately, they are currently downsizing significantly, with the higher paid workers being let go. The number of projects to work on has dropped and so has the number of people here. Too many good people are leaving or have left already. It was nice while it lasted.
Advice to Senior Management – Replacing experienced workers with fresh outs the way that is being done currently is not a good policy. A better solution would be to train new workers in a pipeline with gradual replacement as the older workers leave on their own. The downsizing policy is no way to treat loyal and competent employees.

Pros – -Good benefits.
-Pay is competitive (assuming you did a good job negotiating your starting salary...don't screw this up!)
-Coworkers are down to earth and willing to help.
Cons – -The pace is really slow.
-The way management handles R&D is...questionable. Funding does not seem to reach the "right" people in the right amounts, and there is constant fiddling back and forth about how much of your granted money can be spent and when...it's already been granted, yet they don't want you to spend it at your own pace? I can understand that they don't want you to waste stupidly, but sometimes, it just doesn't make sense from an engineering POV.
-Too much management overhead!!!
Advice to Senior Management – Management needs to get out of the "old fashioned" way of doing work, where it takes years to bring a prototype to market and then even more years before you're able to enter production. The current market vastly out-paces our ability to turn out new products, and that is devastating for our competitive edge.

Pros – Professional Development, you will learn a lot. The people are very smart.
Cons – Working in E&IS is a very narrow area. It's easy to become bored with your work and for things to become monotonous. Managers have a knack for putting younger employees into precise fields rather than letting them explore what they have a passion for and what they do not. If you don't stand up for what you're interested in, you're going to become easily dissatisfied with your work. There's a culture of "not my fault" instead of "How can we make it work?"...not everywhere, but enough that it makes working just that much less fun and productive.
Advice to Senior Management – Rotate your newer employees every year or so to keep them fresh and interested. Extend ELDP methodologies into the rest of the organization.
