Fairly statisfied employee thinks BAE needs improvement in the Human Resources Department.

    Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
    McLean, VA

ProsBAE has good benefits overall. They are the prime contractor for a good number of contracts within the U.S. government. This allows for a wide range of jobs from which to choose.

ConsThe biggest complaint is in regard to job promotion. The criteria for job promotion is largely a hidden secret. While there is documentation explaining different job titles and responsibilities, the method for receiving a promotion is never explained.

Advice to Senior ManagementDetail the process of how a BAE employee can become eligible for promotion. I would also recommend increasing the total yearly amount of money offered for tuition assistance. School tuition has increased dramatically in the last few years, but the amount of tuition assistance offered by BAE has remained static.

Overall satisfaction to be found within the BAE Systems team.

    Principal Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsFlexibility in work and vacation scheduling. Senior management honestly care about employee needs. Employees given the freedom to complete tasks with little oversight. Nearly limitless opportunity for transfer if the current job is getting a little stale. In-house training opportunities are diverse and easy to get enrolled in. Out sourced training opportunity is well funded and almost all requests for training, if in line with current responsibilities, are approved.

ConsMid-level management needs more guidance and direction in how to take care of people. Senior management is sometimes difficult to contact if necessary. Organizational divides can be difficult to work around at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementDirector level managers need to spend more time with program/project level managers mentoring, and helping mid-level managers to understand and realize opportunities for growth.

Awesome place to work for people with a side home business or family

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    San Diego, CA

ProsPeople. Everyone at BAE SYSTEMS is very nice to work with, and cooperates together very well. Teamwork is great here. Also 9/80 schedule is awesome! Managers are very understanding with balance of work & family/life, so they're very flexible. Also you can buy 40 hours of PTO at the beginning of every year, so that you can take more vacations as necessary.

ConsPay is not the greatest, especially when compared with commercial companies, but it's reasonable. Hard to climb up if you are not Caucasian male with lots of seniority.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive promotions and raises based on merit, and listen to innovative employees.

BAE Systems - The worst place for Software Engineers in Silicon Valley

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsThe salary seems great if you're coming out of college. BAE hires and trains many many new engineers. Your workforce is diverse, although most are US Citizens. You get to work on military projects and feel like you're doing your part to help the US's security situation.

ConsThe workforce is old... Seriously old. BAE never seems to fire anyone. There are incompetent engineers who have been working for years and years and yet have managed not to keep up with new technologies or methodologies. It's difficult to get things done as you spend much of your time in worthless meetings that get hijacked by legacy engineers who need to hear their own voices so they can affirm to themselves the need for them being there.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart firing old people who don't do real work anymore... Actually, not just old people, but people in general who don't get things done.

    Great place to work.

    Systems Analyst III (Current Employee)

ProsCompetitive salary, great benefits. Permitted to work 80 hours in 9 days and take every other friday off. Friendly people (although that can depend on your project). Big on training/certifications and getting security clearances.

Consi guess the same negatives that come with working for any very large company...

    Advice to Senior Managementnone....

A poorly managed company that has lost all its credibility with customers and suffering from self-imposed disaster.

    Principal Engineer (Former Employee)
    Crestview, FL

ProsIt is a small company and a good performer can advance quickly.

ConsAn "inner circle" of employees that founded the company exists that can make life miserable for new employees. No money exists for training and professional career enhancing courses. The company routinely lies to their customers about schedule, costs, and capabilities. The company never delivers on schedule and does shoddy work. It is a company where "winging it" is a matter of routine.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour employees are your most valuable asset. Treat them as human beings and never, ever, lie to your employees. They see through the BS and will leave in droves, as you have already witnessed. The company reputation is bad and it will take a long time to win customer confidence again... but you can if you empower your employees and take care of them.

    Big name and big opportunities

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Farnborough, Hampshire, South East England, England (UK)

ProsA great, global organisation to work for. Aims to look after its employees. Opportunities for those who are willing to put in the time and effort, and who have some flexibility / mobility.

ConsThe extent to which the values- Trusted, Innovative and Bold - are embraced depends on where you're based and who you work for, but progress is being made.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to listen and act on employee feedback. The changes you make are noticed and appreciated.

    Great career job.

    Operations Graduate (Current Employee)
    Barrow in Furness, England (UK)

ProsDecent salary for graduate scheme, plenty of extra stuff to get involved in. So much flexibility in terms of where to have placements and how long to have them. Good opportunities for career progression. Good group of friends established. Flexible working hours, half-day Fridays.

ConsTown location isn't ideal. Work isn't always challenging. Some things promised/implied that seem to have fallen through. Sometimes it seems like having a degree hasn't helped much.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage graduates to get involved on shop floor with tradespeople. Make it clear to graduates that they will have advantages to having degrees. Don't just favour tradesmen.

BAE Systems invest heavily into early careers!!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Barrow in Furness, England (UK)

ProsFantastic opportunities to experience cutting edge engineering locally and corporately. Innovative environment with focus on development on early careers.

ConsHas an aged workforce which can make it difficult for young people to be recognised. Although the work is satisfactory, salary is not.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave more trust in graduates to deliver ; give more responsibility and autonomy.
