    Pros

People at BAE Systems are great. They are nice and easy to work with. It feels like a family.

There are tons of work company sponsored events. These events are nice to get to know other employee you might not interact with on a daily basis.

    Cons

Old Technology, this place does not keep up with even the semi-new software technologies.

    Management is very risk adverse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with the rest of the employees better.

    Pros

BAE has good benefits overall. They are the prime contractor for a good number of contracts within the U.S. government. This allows for a wide range of jobs from which to choose.

    Cons

The biggest complaint is in regard to job promotion. The criteria for job promotion is largely a hidden secret. While there is documentation explaining different job titles and responsibilities, the method for receiving a promotion is never explained.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Detail the process of how a BAE employee can become eligible for promotion. I would also recommend increasing the total yearly amount of money offered for tuition assistance. School tuition has increased dramatically in the last few years, but the amount of tuition assistance offered by BAE has remained static.

    Pros

Competitive salary, great benefits. Permitted to work 80 hours in 9 days and take every other friday off. Friendly people (although that can depend on your project). Big on training/certifications and getting security clearances.

    Cons

i guess the same negatives that come with working for any very large company...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    none....

    Pros

Flexibility in work and vacation scheduling. Senior management honestly care about employee needs. Employees given the freedom to complete tasks with little oversight. Nearly limitless opportunity for transfer if the current job is getting a little stale. In-house training opportunities are diverse and easy to get enrolled in. Out sourced training opportunity is well funded and almost all requests for training, if in line with current responsibilities, are approved.

    Cons

Mid-level management needs more guidance and direction in how to take care of people. Senior management is sometimes difficult to contact if necessary. Organizational divides can be difficult to work around at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Director level managers need to spend more time with program/project level managers mentoring, and helping mid-level managers to understand and realize opportunities for growth.

    Pros

People. Everyone at BAE SYSTEMS is very nice to work with, and cooperates together very well. Teamwork is great here. Also 9/80 schedule is awesome! Managers are very understanding with balance of work & family/life, so they're very flexible. Also you can buy 40 hours of PTO at the beginning of every year, so that you can take more vacations as necessary.

    Cons

Pay is not the greatest, especially when compared with commercial companies, but it's reasonable. Hard to climb up if you are not Caucasian male with lots of seniority.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give promotions and raises based on merit, and listen to innovative employees.

BAE Systems - The worst place for Software Engineers in Silicon Valley

    Pros

The salary seems great if you're coming out of college. BAE hires and trains many many new engineers. Your workforce is diverse, although most are US Citizens. You get to work on military projects and feel like you're doing your part to help the US's security situation.

    Cons

The workforce is old... Seriously old. BAE never seems to fire anyone. There are incompetent engineers who have been working for years and years and yet have managed not to keep up with new technologies or methodologies. It's difficult to get things done as you spend much of your time in worthless meetings that get hijacked by legacy engineers who need to hear their own voices so they can affirm to themselves the need for them being there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start firing old people who don't do real work anymore... Actually, not just old people, but people in general who don't get things done.

    Pros

It is a small company and a good performer can advance quickly.

    Cons

An "inner circle" of employees that founded the company exists that can make life miserable for new employees. No money exists for training and professional career enhancing courses. The company routinely lies to their customers about schedule, costs, and capabilities. The company never delivers on schedule and does shoddy work. It is a company where "winging it" is a matter of routine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees are your most valuable asset. Treat them as human beings and never, ever, lie to your employees. They see through the BS and will leave in droves, as you have already witnessed. The company reputation is bad and it will take a long time to win customer confidence again... but you can if you empower your employees and take care of them.

I have been working at BAE Systems UK full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Unionised workforce, decent canteen facilities, great flexitime policy, generally laidback atmosphere. Most of my colleagues are easy to get on with and it is rarely a stressful environment to work in.

    Cons

The only cons I can think of are that once you reach you the top of the professional grades you need to move up to the executive ranks if you want to increase your pay.

Former Intern - Summer Engineering Intern in Rochester, South East England, England (UK)

I worked at BAE Systems UK as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of graduates and fellow interns there to socialise with.
    The cafeteria is pretty good.
When asked for a different project, my wish was granted.
They drill in the requirement to go through each stage of the engineering process properly.

    Cons

The first task I was assigned to was uninspiring, and quite boring.
One of the mentors seemed very pedantic regarding the content of reports.
Was only given the chance to do the more interesting second task for 3 weeks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep asking interns for feedback regarding their internship to determine whether or not to move them to a different role
Inform interns about the exact role before the start of the internship, and ask if they want to change

I have been working at BAE Systems UK full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent and really interesting product, services and technologies
Opportunity to be involved, manage, lead large value, complex and long term projects / platforms
Provided you are flexible if needed with location - there is always somewhere in the company that needs your skill set
Strong and consistent strategy and governance principles

    Cons

    Politics involved in everything
Outsourced IT and HR services that don't work
Many people that are not prepared to take a decision and have to push everything upwards
If you don't push yourself into stretch activities and your own self development - you will get limited support

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Greater level of engagement via walk-around rather than just posting a blog entry
Greater consistency and fairness in pay and progression
Have the guts to take bold decisions and be visible in your leadership of the organisation rather than in an office or "offsite with the customer"
