Listen to your employees and take their ideas seriously. Employees are not paid to be strictly "yes - men" except for at BAE Systems.

    Pros

People are great to work with and that is what will drive you to stay. Very flexible work and home balance. Onsite workout center and offer a lot of health tips/coaches/options. On-site cafe (can be pricey but good food). Depending on what department you are in the managers are excellent and communicate. Offer 401k with match. Working for a great cause on products that protect our military.

    Cons

Work environment is all cubes and they are OLD and dirty. We couldn't get them to vacuum the place regularly so its dingy. Benefits are costly and drive you to the answer the company wants. Management is basically told to put unachievable goals for merit reviews, and then they are told what they can hand down to how many people. So sometimes it's not a matter of how well you did but if you got a good merit last year if there are several people that earn good reviews then you may not get what you deserve. You also have to drive your own career path and promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to make the employees feel like a part of the company instead of just working for pay.

    Pros

Lot's of telecommuting opportunities and flexibile work schedules.

    Cons

Management is very poor, disfunctional and there is alot of the "good old boy network " regardless of how you perform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start taking a true pulse of your employees and pay attention as to why top performers are sprinting towards the exits.

I worked at BAE Systems USA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Overall it is similar to other big name defense contracting firm.. For the San Diego, CA site, depending on the program you are on, the projects attempt to used latest technology (primarily Java). This is a plus. In general most sw developers are good to excellent. There are also some slackers that do enough to get by. Most of the time, you work on average of 40 hrs with occasional OT. Industry average or slightly above pay with average merit increase.

    Cons

Difficult to stand out as your supervisor and management tend to look out for themselves and pay little attention to the underlings. Since the company is quite large, you're just a number and a cell in their annual performance spreadsheets. Some projects and groups are quite click-ish where new person joining the team may feel as you don't fit in.
Benefit has been reduce quite a bit to reduce cost and be more competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

more transparency and better communication between the worker bees and middle to senior management.

I have been working at BAE Systems USA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

BAE has the current contract with the federal government, department of defense.

    Cons

Despite their rhetoric BAE cares nothing for their employees. As one might expect, BAE is all about the profits. My personal experience is that BAE bid lower than their cost when bidding for the contract that I work under. This resulted in lay-offs for 20% of the people on that contract and salary cuts for those that remained. Some by as much as 35 or 40%! It did not seem to bother or affect senior management at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is totally disconnected from the workforce. They go thru the motions without any thought beyond being able to "check the box", we got that done.

    Pros

a bigger company with somewhat job security

    Cons

    expensive health benefits (huge deductibles)
    horrible timekeeping portal
training funding and opportunities are difficult to apply for, and easily denied.

I worked at BAE Systems USA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

BAE Systems USA operates in several interesting sectors of the ADG sector which provides capable employees multiple avenues for growth. Some locations have deep/ evolved technical cultures that provide the potential for engineers to become state-of-the-art subject matter experts.

    Cons

BAE is an amalgamation of multiple companies/ cultures, mostly the product of acquisitions. The leadership over the last several years has struggled to come up with a unifying culture that is "BAE" without much success; partly because the former cultures were strong and partly the result of uninspired leadership.
Long range planning/ forecasting is a sham...numbers are forced on line management usually resulting in the need to find a "fall guy" when the forecasts don't materialize...checkout the leadership turnover in the operating companies.
HR weakest of the several ADG companies I've worked for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Relax...pay attention to the basics. Focus on excellence, respect your customers and employees and the "culture" will emerge.
Have the courage to be realistic about forecasting in a declining market.
Do a better job in succession planning and executive hiring..way too many bad appointments.
DeMuro undoing predecessor's mistakes and excesses..keep it up.
