I have been working at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good opportunity to advance if you work long hours. Competitive salary and benefits.

    Cons

Lots of reorganization and downsizing. Businesses must make financial KPIs quickly and consistently or they will be restructured or sold off. Lots of job loss, lots of turnover. It is harder to keep a marginal business going sometimes than it is to make a profit in a growing one, but hard work in a declining business is not rewarded.

    Pros

A great learning experience. Decent pay. The culture was great. Had the opportunity to meet people in other research groups. Felt very involved with the ongoing research.

    Cons

I do not believe I encountered any cons during my two summer internships with the company. I have nothing negative to say.

I have been working at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great work environment
Great People - vast majority are interested in establishing and maintaining productive work relationships
Great Benefits - Healthcare, Tuition Reimbursement, Strong 401K
Flexible work arrangements (virtual office is an option for some roles)
    Work life balance
Option to spend 3 to 5 years working abroad or overseas

    Cons

Company wants to see you spend 3 years in your role before moving on. However, there is a steady flow of employees who spend as little as one year in their roles before moving on.
Promotions are based on management favorites
Must have a chemical background (chemistry or chemical engineering) for most roles
Limited opportunities for minorities... you have to be white to be noticed
Most jobs call for technical experience that is not actually necessary
Hiring Managers are not brave enough to look at non-chemistry backgrounds for promotions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If Company Policy allows for movement in 3 years, please do not force employees to pay meaningless "taxes" in their role for longer than they have to. Expand virtual work options for non-production roles such as sales, product management, supply chain, marketing etc. Commit to better utilizing employee skills to improve your business.

BASF is a wonderful company to work for as an intern, but its HR department is definitely lacking.

I worked at BASF Corporation as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

When you work in a small plant, you get to know everyone very quickly, and it feels like you're going to work every day to be with your second family. You don't technically get "vacation days," but if you're friendly with your manager, he/she will definitely let you take a day or two off without pay. If you're open to it, there are multiple opportunities to gain a lot of knowledge from everyone you get in contact with.

    Cons

Since the manufacturing field is a male-dominated field, a female intern may find it difficult to initially "fit in." HR definitely needs improvement with its communication to "summer hire" interns. You basically don't hear from them at all, and you feel like second-class citizens in comparison to the "exclusive" PDP interns.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to include interns more in meetings to maximize their exposure to the company and the industry in general. Also try to make out-of-state interns feel more at home by encouraging HR to actually organize some events for interns.

Politics and leadership with nontransparent agendas

    Pros

Pay, benefits are good. Working conditions were better than most. Exhibits concerns about work/life balance. Generally well trained in the job.

    Cons

Management slow to keep up with technology. Not open to ideas that are not theirs which stiffles new ideas and developments.

I have been working at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for development and growth in your career. You have a chance to move up the ladder or take lateral moves. You can choose to have a job with lots of depth of knowledge (subject matter expert) or you can take a path to broader skill set with experts on your team. If you want to work abroad or move around within the US, that is all possible as well. Pretty much there is a fit for just about anyone. Salary and benefits are top notch. If you want to go back to school, that's a benefit. If you need a flexible schedule to work from home, it's possible. Plus there are perks like discounts with appliance and car manufacturers.

    Cons

If you want to move up, you need to be mobile. This is true for most global companies, but especially true of BASF. It is a very large company so with that comes bureaucracy. Work loads can be difficult to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the policies for developing talent. This is a best practice. However, with that, thinning down workforce and adding that work to remaining employees shoulders is tough. That will impede long term retention.
