Former Employee - Plant Floor Team in Wyandotte, MI

I worked at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Most co-workers were hard working, diligent and team oriented.

    Cons

Plant leadership makes major negative snap decisions and discipline is not given on an equal basis; older workers are not treated well and it is very obvious. High turnover due to frequent firings and company demands to terminate contract staff. Younger workers were allowed numerous and significant mistakes without a warning and had much time where they weren't required to work, while older workers were severely disciplined for the most minor infractions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review incident reports and look at how older workers are unequally treated; at some point this will become a legal issue for this management team.

    Pros

BASF is a well-run successful company with a long history. The benefits are excellent and the company has shown a real interest in its employess, both in the way of compensation and development. It is an exciting and enjoyable place to work. There are many opportunities to move acroos function and between business groups, and this is encouraged. Your development is in your hands. Opportunity exists to travel all over the world.

    Cons

Like any large company, BASF can be slow moving, but there has been continuous improvement in this area over the past 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the amount of risk-taking and encourage employees tp do the same.

    Pros

It is a great place to start and grow your career.

    Cons

True diversity is limited - where strengths of all individuals are valued. If you think or act in a different way compared to the 'norm' you can run into problems. For those with more experience, BASF can offer limited growth and career opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Abusive leadership needs to be addressed in a strong manner. Make true diversity principles work at all levels.

I have been working at BASF Corporation

    Pros

The company has recently taken strong moves to promote work / life balance and allowed a more flexible work environment. It is a large corporation and it has a full benefits package including matching 401K contributions up to 4% of salary.

    Cons

The high performance organization performance reviews / merit salary increases seem focused on justifying inflation level yearly salary increases. I am not sure if it is a downside, but the jobs are posted internally and externally at the same time - and it seems to discount experience within the company. Lastly, nobody seems to have heard of BASF - everyone seems to remember our old tapes division.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the company profitable or the Germans will get rid of us all.
