I have been working at BB&T full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Compensation is great, Company really believes and practices its values for employees and customers. Opportunities for personal growth every year through training. Great life balance perks and benefits.

    Cons

As companies get larger the understanding of processes between departments gets clouded. Sometimes and irritant. As always too much work and not enough hours in a day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Holistic approach to all processes would leverage more consistency and learning between LOBs.

I have been working at BB&T full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great training program and great health benefits program. Still offers a pension plan.

    Cons

The company limits internal progression by basing movement ability on current job grade rather than basing on actual qualifications. The company also has great values but not all areas of the company actually understand, live, and teach those values. The company also faces struggles with technology and system development; consistently trying to develop applications and programs in house where it is obvious that is not a strength of the company.

    Pros

Outstanding people throughout the organization. Very talented and knowledgeable in the financial industry.

    Cons

Do not seem to look up enough to see what others are doing even if it is to just understand what is driving changes in the industry. The budget and project process is very informal and relationship based.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clearly communicate the strategies that are important to ensuring that the best years are ahead.

I have been working at BB&T full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Challenging position with plenty of training opportunities. Above average compensation and excellent benefits including 6% 401K match and Defined Benefit Pension Plan. For the most part the people I work with are great.

    Cons

Like most companies these days they are taking advantage of the economy and not giving raises like they should. Sometimes technical decisions are made by middle managers that don't have a clue. They solicit advice and direction from the Sr. Engineers but often ignore it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You had better get with it on the yearly raises or you will start losing some very talented employees. There are some large companies moving into the area and they are actively recruiting top notch IT talent with attractive offers.

    Pros

Pay is ok but negotiate up when you get an offer because raises are minimal.

    Cons

Growth is minimal for non LDP grads

LDP doesn't like internal candidates; It does happen but its rare.

A lot of in fighting with some groups in the wealth division

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide cross training and advancement opps. JobAwareness doesn't mean anything if your mgr kills your app because they want you to stay and make them look good.

    Pros

Sr Management does things to keep employees happy, such as giving you your birthday off. Benefits are very good, especially for singles.

    Cons

The pay is so-so for the industry. Biggest drawback is opportunities for growth, you may be told one thing at one point, but then something completely different. Depends on the department, but from my experience and others I know, management that actually cares about personal employee growth versus how their review looks is harder and harder to find

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a look at employees who work hard (at all levels) and give them opportunities to keep learning and growing, this will keep alot of the good employees happy, as well as make them want even more to be a part of this company. Overall, BB&T is a solid company to work for in an economy that is less than desirable.

I have been working at BB&T full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Always looking for people to hire, both Financial and Technical

    Cons

A lot of policing. Inside employees refer to BBT as Big Brother and Trust because they have people walk thru the offices and report to managment what thye see that they do not like or may not meet their standards like papers on the desk, chair not under desk after 5, not sitting correctlu in chair (feet to the side and not directlu in front) etc among other crazy communist things. The call centers seem to be the worst. After exceeding set high standards for numerous job requirements, get a 1% salary increase. Does not even pay for my gas and I have 2 degrees. . Stay away!!!

    I worked at BB&T

    Pros

I enjoyed most of my time with BB&T. The Sr. Management folks are well versed in their fields, BB&T will not loan funds for projects where eminent domain was used to grab the land, they have a strong conservative philosophy that has positioned BB&T to weather the current economy virtually unscathed, and are positioned to continue growth in what is a tight market. In short, from a business and investment perspective, BB&T may not make one a large return, but BB&T is also going to be around where others will fail.

    Cons

There seems to be a large disconnect between the operational aspect of BB&T and the IT groups. While the business end of BB&T has mechanisms in place for recognition and reward, there are little to none of these mechanisms in place for IT. When this is mentioned, it is quickly swept under the rug. Another con is no room for advancement. When management is queried about this, one gets answers pointing at positions like "Distinguished Technologist," what is not pointed out is there is only one such position and it is filled. Further, IT at BB&T is based on a culture of blame-storming. While I agree that one must take account of ones actions, BB&T seemed to stress the negative side of the equation instead of realizing the equation should balance. In short, it was always get it right or you're fired instead of any good job or thank you's. I cannot recommend BB&T as a place to work in IT. There are some real bright spots and tremendous managers, but from this writer's experience they are the exception and not the norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay greater attention to the middle managers and how their groups are performing, retention and turnover.
