Strong company hitting hard times due to regulations and outside pressures

Bank Officer (Former Employee)
Winston-Salem, NC

I worked at BB&T full-time for more than 7 years

ProsThe culture is a strong part of BB&T. They make a large investment in training and feedback. I had a great manager, who cared about me both personally and professionally. I always felt respected and supported from within the organization.

ConsThe pressure of the banking industry affects all banks, especially large banks like BB&T. There are expected layoffs looming and some departments including commercial banking are feeling the squeeze. Work life balance in commercial and private banking can be very difficult, especially if you are seen as a top performer. Outside pressure causes the bank to be extremely cautious, which makes change slow and work hours inflexible.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep rewarding the performers and top performers. Encourage more day to day fun as an entire culture.

Great Leadership Theory... and potential to be great

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Winston-Salem, NC

I worked at BB&T full-time for more than 7 years

ProsLove the job and may of the people. Really believe in Senior Management and their vision for the company and it's future. I would've been a loyal employee for life.

ConsMANY MANY depts have Senior level managers who are only looking out for their carreer and not what's best for the company or dept they are supposed to be leading. Personally withnessed lieing, taking credit for others work, and general dislike of loyal employees who do their job but aren't considered "super stars" because they don't kiss up to people. I stood up for my employees and my manager when a Senior level manager wanted to help get her fired. I really felt a HUGE loyality to this company and ultimately was let down. A few bad apples ruin it for everyone. However i'm SO VERY thankful for the lessons I learned and will apply them to my next job and work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior Mgmt: You are doing great things and have created a great environment - ask your lower & middle level managers what is best.... you're senior leaders may not be as in touch with whats going on and how things should work...or worse ...looking at only the corporate ladder and not their people. PS WATCH YOUR TURN OVER... if a Manager has >75%.... maybe it's the manager and not the job.

Poor company culture

Curriculum Designer (Current Employee)
Winston-Salem, NC

I have been working at BB&T full-time for more than a year

ProsThere are few, really good people that work there. Plus, the pay was pretty good.

ConsThe companies culture sucks! Way too beaucratic, and even childish at times. Everyone wants to tell you how to do your job even though they have no clue. Very old school, "thou shalt do what I say because I say so" metality of doing business. My personal experience included micromanaging, which I hate!

Advice to Senior ManagementGet with the times. Employees are not slaves. Most of us are very smart in our own area and work very hard. Give your employees more freedom and let us do our job.

A great opportunity for anyone who is looking for job security and to work in a place with enjoyable people.

Business Loan Administration Credit Analyst I (Current Employee)
Winston-Salem, NC

I have been working at BB&T

ProsLaid back working enviroment. Everyone is working together to achieve the same goal. Good benefits that go along with industry. Strong senior management.

ConsPay is below the industry average. Employees that have the "LDP" crediential are treated at a higher level than ones that don't.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo look at employees as individuals and not caudle them with everything that gets done.

extremely closed with poor communication

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at BB&T

Prosthere are some tremendous people employed here, and a strong internal sense of accomplishment. The mid level management team is committed to success and there is a strong training program.

ConsEXTREMELY siloed and very poor communication. John Allison leaving was a severe lost. The different channels do not function well together and senior management is a good old boys clib
