    Pros

Benefits are okay. San Antonio office is located around good places to eat for lunch.

    Cons

Very unprofessional environment. Company does not practice what it preaches...doesn't follow core values. In fact does not have values. There is no teamwork only dog eat dog mentality. Employees at San Antonio office are so unprofessional with their office drama. Company treats contractors with little respect. There is a great deal of politics involved and to succeed in this company you need to brown nose the managers. It's a high school environment in an office setting. There is no work-life balance and managers do not care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to stop the cronyism and reinvent yourself to be better leaders by having leadership seminars for your managers. Also, there needs to be some accountability of the managers instead of blaming their subordinates. Teams are as good as their weakest link and it is the job of managers to strengthen that weakest link.

I have been working at BD full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nice facility, in-house gym, mandatory ergo assessment of each work station. Work-life balance is good for most positions. Organic garden - if you like gardening you can plant your own vegetables there.

    Cons

Slow: too many meetings, too few decisions. People are discouraged to speak up their technical mind, if this is not "politically" correct at a particular moment. I can never figure out what politics have to do with science.
Being pro-active is not a good thing here. Everything is solved on a reaction basis: deal with it when it happens, do not bring bad news ahead of time and try to solve "non-existing" problems! As in many other companies the management does not want to hear about problems. They want solutions! But how do you solve an issue if you do not want to acknowledge that it exists? Especially if you need other people on board to help you solve that issue. Tough!
If you work very hard, management will keep putting more work on your plate and constantly point out not what you have accomplished, but what you did not. On the other hand if you push back and slack off - that is OK too: management will let you be and later when your work does not get done they will cover for you (what a nice benefit for lazy people we have here!). Since the management did not want to deal with your laziness they feel obliged to cover their own incompetency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not be scared of hearing about problems, embrace the problems and facilitate their solutions.

    I worked at BD

    Pros

Nice people, good product, compensation is reasonable and benefits are very good.

    Cons

No support from upper management, work-life balance does not exist, lack of training on the "BD"-way of doing things and too many acronyms used, it makes it difficult to a new employee to understand the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide new employees with orientations and training; you will get more from an employee if they know what you are asking for. Management should talk to their employees, there is a tremendous amount of knowledge and skills that are overlooked. Treat employees with the respect they deserve. Follow the company values that are preached!

    I worked at BD

    Pros

Job felt stable; company has been around a long time. Lots of policies and processes in place for those who like that type of thing. Worked with some great people.

    Cons

Felt like a behemoth of a company in which it was hard to accomplish any kind of meaningful change. Trying to make changes is like trying to turn the Titanic.

I have been working at BD full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great pay, benefits, and bonuses. People are easy to work with and are motivated. Laid back office culture. Plenty of room for personal growth. BD offers several different educational programs and opportunities to learn and grow.

    Cons

You need to push for learning opportunities and growth. You have to work long hours if you want to show upper management that you are an outstanding employee. To much of a cost driven company, need to focus more on quality and innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to develop your star employees. Ask them their goals and act upon them. Lower cost will come with safety, quality, and innovation.

Full of BS, Politics - highly non-technical "technical" leaders

I worked at BD full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Only pro I can think of is a good work-life balance - most folks dont show up to work until 10AM or later and most folks leave at 4.30PM.

    Cons

There is no value for technical folks. Use of worst practices especially when it comes to product design.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please get rid of folks in management (many directors and senior managers) who are just "coffee drinker" managers. They just sit around and do politics and drive people without any clue of what they are doing. Their aim is to get credit and move up in the ladder at the cost of the hard work of others (especially technical folks). This is 100% true with BD Medical Medical Surgical Systems. Even corporate shared services such as corporate CAE is full of BS and hand waving without any technical substance. People are so politically connected and it is almost impossible to do the right thing against these useless people.
