I have been working at BD

    Pros

    - They have great compensation and benefits
    - beautiful NJ campus
    - many international locations
    - internal mobility is starting to pick up, certainly much better in the past few years.

    Cons

    - sometimes being TOO risk adverse is not a good thing as it gets in the way of making decisions and creates a lot of additional (sometimes meaningless) tasks.

I have been working at BD full-time

    Pros

Many good opportunities for growth within the company. Big and necessary changes made in the past 3-5 years that allow the company to remain highly-competitive in the market and to potential recruits.

    Cons

Still many people who believe the company owes them something because they have not worked in other industries or for other companies and seen how businesses have been forced to adapt in the last decade. If a company isn't evolving, they are falling behind.

I worked at BD full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Beautiful facility! Wonderful cafeteria! Company is health and environmentally conscientious. Great working conditions with modern, up to date tools.

    Cons

Extremely nice people in a very corporate world makes decisions difficult. The "hierarchy" is very evident. Too many temps, they need to hire full time employees; I feel like I train 3 days a week!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop filling the gaps with temps and really hire people. Surely it cost a lot more to use temps and its not a good reflection on the company as a whole to the community. You can have all the "service" days you want to "help the community" but hiring full time employees is best. Last bit of advice: Get over yourselves! The campus is nice but you NEVER get to walk the grounds! Lighten up!

I have been working at BD full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Work life balance is good. Stable, and mostly well-managed company. Pay is competitive, and sometimes exceeds similar companies. Benefits are still pretty good but, like many companies, have eroded somewhat over the years. People are very pleasant and many are quite talented.

    Cons

BD is trying to reinvent itself as a cutting edge pharma-tech company, when it truly is just another old-school medical device/diagnostics company. They struggle to innovate in- house, and are turning towards acquisitions to fill the pipeline, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Like a lot of other companies, Opportunities to grow professionally are based not so much on what you know, but who you know, in this heavily matrixed organization. If you are not one of "the chosen", you will only go so far, before you will need to leave. Noticeable trend towards filling some roles based on youth/ethnicity, depending on what region is being targeted for growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow the pace of culture/infrastructure change down a bit, know you are trying to catch up to companies against which you benchmark yourself, but people are seriously burning out. Re-evaluate your diversity inclusion objectives. Think about how to distinguish yourself from the pack once again.

Good industry and company - not a place for an HR career

Former Employee - Human Resources Manager in Franklin Lakes, NJ

I worked at BD full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great industry and commitment to helping others. Most functions, outside of HR, generally well-run. Beautiful office campus.

    Cons

Highly political and biased decision making in internal promotional/selection and rewards - relatively high HR turnover in the U.S. HR senior management has little to no interest in HR being an employee advocate as they are highly focused on being "strategic" only. Little to no value for lower level employees (entry level staff, hourly/support) long terms employees - very prone to thinking who's new/young will be better. They tout diversity - but the interpretation is very narrow and applies to being diverse in race only and results in overall narrow-minded thinking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some new outside talent to lead HR - leaders who will challenge management to see the true meaning of diversity and really living the core values - not just using values as a marketing tool.

Current Employee - Research and Development Manager in Research Triangle Park, NC

I have been working at BD full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Lots of smart people, ethics is a priority, a genuine atmosphere of respect between co-workers. Career development opportunities are there if you seek them out.

    Cons

Senior management rotates frequently, making accountability difficult. A highly matrixed organization where "no" votes seem to count more than "yes" votes - this makes getting new initiatives off the ground very difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Broad experience across all of the businesses is important. Try to get this experience at mid- to higher-level managers instead of waiting until they are business presidents. Allow the presidents to stay in their roles for 4-5 years to implement their strategic initiatives and see how they execute.

I have been working at BD full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Very ethical. They try to do the right thing.
People are professional, nice & not cut throat
Great medical & financial benefits. They still even have a pension.
Large stable environment in most departments.
    Good financial performance.

    Cons

Very process heavy, bureaucratic. Very difficult to get things done.
People in corporate HQ can ignore you if you need something from them but once they need something from you, it's always ASAP!
They are trying to centralize a lot of functions so they answer directly to corporate. While it seems like they are trying to make corporate level positions open to other offices, most opportunities to move up are still in Franklin Lakes.
They have acquired a lot of companies recently but tend to stifle their innovation with process. They are great at FDA approved medical devices but not at fast moving, research heavy products. Most of their recent innovation has been through acquisition, not internal.
They are moving some manufacturing and even some software engineering jobs outside of the US so there may be a decline in lower end manufacturing and easily off-shored jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the 2008 "do more with less" mentality or you will start suffering from turnover.
Ensure your acquisitions & faster moving segments can stay nimble.
