Former Employee - Staff Accountant in Edmonton, AB (Canada)

I worked at BDO Canada full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

monthly lunch, firm supported activities, sick days leave with pay

    Cons

staff, manager, senior manager, and partners have no enough communication. managers have less experience in managing staff, and senior managers only focus on their own work, own clients. partners are too busy, have no time to listen the voice from staff. there are a lot of prejudices against staff at Edmonton office

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

all the staff above manager level should really take some courses regarding to how to manage people, how to encourage your staff, should listen the voice from other people instead of listen to the manager only.

    Pros

Accountants have excellent technical knowledge, lots of great people spread out across the firm

    Cons

Not having effective leadership in the sales and marketing group has made internal politics very apparent and has left gaps in many areas that affects the very nature of the department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider hiring a consultancy firm that would help in setting appropriate strategy, objectives and goals for the marketplace team.

    Pros

Decent work environment - work/life balance seems to be important.

    Cons

General lack of direction. The talk is talked but the walk isn't walked in terms of becoming a force to be reckoned with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seems to have trouble at identifying their identity. They would like to be able to be one of the top 5, but I'm not certain that they have the resources or experience to do so.
