I worked at BDO USA full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere for the most part. Felt like it was impossible to get fired, unless you were in and admin/hr/support position. Most were friendly, although there was definitely that "B" team awkwardness feel too. If you're a female they'd love to promote you to partner, especially a good looking one, but def even the not so good looking ones.

You will not work a lot.

    Cons

You will not learn a lot. Firm is very cheap. From happy hours to reimbursement dinners ($10) this is no big four. Worked in both audit and consulting and can tell you the partners must view themselves as the "B" team when it comes to pricing engagements, so cheap, they have to be a cheap firm.

They're aquiring small firms with a "c" team intelligence level. You fell like no one knows a damn thing around there in general. There were a handful of intelligent people I worked with, but it was slim, maybe 5%.

PTO and benefits were definitely lacking. My PTO was 16 days total. They are open Christmas eve, not a very Christian oriented company. Pay was way under market as stop performer, I left for a 28% raise to a competitor and received an additional 10 PTO days.

Some partners were so awkward you wonder how they could ever bring in business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote some people to partner that are normal/ have a personality. (Think about it when promoting a new MP in Dallas)

I worked at BDO USA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company really upholds flex time and people (non partners) are generally nice.
    Perks and benefits are alright
Lots of initiatives around new culture.
Lots of new people joining the firm; meet different faces.

    Cons

Existing partners have no expertise in their areas and repeatedly embarrass themselves in front of clients
Leadership is focused on revenue growth and profit; no focus on career growth or training
Staff is blamed for quality issues on audits; Partners are lax and then point finger at others for their carelessness
Partners ignore issues that staff raises to them about client concerns, until last minute

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teach your partners to become better at their jobs or buy them out of their partnership.
    Use 360 degree review approach.
Stop blaming your staff for every mistake at the firm level.
Take responsibility and own up to your shortcomings.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I was given the chance to work on a large project, prestigious client. Lots of good learning on the job.

    Cons

After 8 years I was bored; wanted exposure to other projects. Team leader didn't care about career development. No support from other offices to help in business development. Politics and favoritism at group head level (consulting) created barrier for me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more formal leadership or career development, so you don't lose your employees.

I worked at BDO USA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Firm has good people at associate / manager level
    Colleagues are fun and helpful.
    Awesome holiday period time off.

    Cons

Unprofessional partners; under-dressed for work, always counting their profit, not thinking about their team or clients
Ethics and values not followed - cursing in meetings, making racial jokes, yelling from their office to their staff
Joining from an acquisition (consulting team) I am disappointed BDO bought us because my old company had better leaders and cared about their employees' careers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train leadership. Help your employees and care about their careers.

I worked at BDO USA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary okay. Paychecks delivered on time.

    Cons

This company is in the dark ages. Every partner has their own agenda and they are out of touch with the market. consulting team led by an old-timer. Very greedy and egomaniac. big gap between what they say and what they do. not allowed to think ; dictatorship culture. After 5 years I had enough. My only option was to find another job because no career development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Firm is beyond help. might want to rebuild certain teams from scratch with brand new people.

I worked at BDO USA full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The company has campaign around core values. CEO and company intranet post lots of positive messages. Pay is decent.

    Cons

I worked in the consulting team for about 4 months. during interviews I was told a good story. In reality I experienced: Partners were taking 2-3 days off every week claiming they worked from home. Barely any group meetings or feedback on how the business is doing. Entire staff team was working late 4-5 nights a week, until 11pm. Mgmt played blame game when anything went wrong, instead of showing up for work. I found a new job and ran away as fast as possible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

CEO and senior management might want to investigate consulting team - some very unhappy and overworked people being led by selfish and toxic partners.
