Great Experience in Oil & Gas Industry

Specialist (Current Employee)
Victoria, TX

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time for less than a year

ProsAbove average pay and benefits. Great bonus structure. Awesome people to work with.

ConsVery top-down structure. Hard to be heard. Not much autonomy. Very fast paced. Not enough tools available.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen, perceptions may be wrong.

Micro Managed and felt lied to.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Tulsa, OK

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time for more than a year

ProsPay and benefits are nice, except when you consider the work environment. Those are the only pros I can think of.

ConsMicro Managed. I worked for a Tulsa company that they took over. Many promises made, none of them kept. The more I hear from fellow employees that did make the move the happier I am I did not. They try to run every aspect of your life, I was shocked how invasive they were trying to get. Everything you read in these reviews about politics over substance is very very true!

Advice to Senior ManagementRelax a little, keep promises made to employees...even newly acquired employees. things would run smoother if people didn't have to go all the way up the food chain for the little things.

worked with some good people

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at BHP Billiton as a contractor for less than a year

Prosgreat opportunity for worldwide exposure / experience

Consrelocated on other side of the planet on my own dime for the company to cut stuff. Was told by reliable source that this occurs every year about the same time.
also too many layers slowing ability to make decisions, lack of cohesive management, would often be given multiple different point of focus for the same tasks by multiple managers.

Part of Petrohawk acquisition - less than 6% remain at BHP

IM Supervisor (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time for more than a year

Proscafeteria ($2, really good food, nice salad bar)
safety culture (seem to really want to make sure a dangerous business is not un-safe)
good computing resources (16GB on a windows machine)
insurance and bonuses are pretty good

Consmassive turnover (90+% of Petrohawk employees left of their own accord), BHP ppl are leaving too
people are not very happy (BHP ppl in general), few smile or say "hello"
horrible network and computer performance due to monitoring software and other issues
processes are neither simple or efficient like former CEO Kloppers liked to say they were
functional excellence model is an excuse to not hire the number of employees needed to do the work required
too many approvals needed to get anything done regardless of cost or impact to the organization
I don't think BHP understood the onshore e&p business, thought it would be like offshore or another mining division
poor work-life balance

Advice to Senior ManagementSee how other successful onshore companies work and try to find a happy medium between "process" and "results". Get rid of contracting companies who add poor value - keeping head count low is not the most important thing.

A great company with positive values.

Finance Manager (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time for more than 5 years

ProsNice office location and good people to work with. Lots of growth and job opportunities. Company appears to be very employee focused.

ConsTo much process and sometimes this makes it difficult to do our jobs. To many system changes and past senior leadership was a con. This seems to be changing.
