I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary, Benefits, Working Conditions, development opportunities, work life balance, the whole package and experience of working for this company was excellent. Lean management structure was impressive

    Cons

Non really apart they divested from the UK leaving behind a workforce in the hands of a not so good company...

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - values orientated leadership
    - global opportunities
    - strong development plan process
    - reward high performers with renumeration package
    - Very good leaders at manger level and above

    Cons

    - Resources industry moves in cycles, ups and downs, and the number of staff & contractors also move up and down. In my 8 years with them I went through two downturns - not a pleasant experience. But if you are a proven performer you should be ok
    - Can be a sense of "new initiative overload"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at BHP Billiton as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Interning at this company was an amazing experience. They have really grown the internship program in recent years and the support that interns receive from HR, the senior leadership team, and their departments is phenomenal. We always felt like we were a part of the team and not simply a temp worker for the summer. We had a nice schedule laid out for the summer that included site visits and social outings with interns and employees. The Galleria area is a great place to live, and the 9/80 work week made our summer that much more fun. The work-life balance was also great and I never felt like I had to take my work home with me. The high pay was great to have, but the provided housing is what really sealed the deal.

    Cons

With such a large organization, we found ourselves in meetings more often than I would have liked. Sometimes we wouldn't see our supervisors until after hours because they were running from meeting to meeting all day.

    Pros

Large multi-national that provides lot of opportunities for those prepared to work for them and seek them out. Good remuneration and benefits.

    Cons

In a company of this size there will always be restrictions in terms of how to operate and how things are to be done to maintain control of such a large company which can be frustrating at times. Internal politics, but you get that in every organisations.

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits! The company pays more than lip service to it's commitment to sustainability (keeping employees/contractors safe, operating responsibly, protecting the environment, etc.).. Many A+ managers and individual contributors. World class assets. Good leadership at the helm of the corporation and the Petroleum business. Plenty of opportunity to build your own career and be rewarded for it provided you are willing to put forth the effort required.

    Cons

Dealing with draconian processes and bureaucracies can be cumbersome. Under previous administrations a culture of fear emerged and many people were hesitant to take vacation or sick time for fear of not doing some work. This is improving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

BHP is undergoing a massive corporate culture redefinition. Stay the course--keep doing what you're doing--it's working!

    Pros

Compensation and benefits second to none, work/life balance respected

    Cons

Bureacracy common of larger corporations, many layers of managment, slow progression (in most cases)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
