Pros – Flexible working, family friendly, working on high profile topics that often make the headlines, varied work, access to overseas jobs in British Embassies, lots of chances to build a network with various sectors of business
Cons – Lots of cynicism from lifelong civil servants, lots of bureaucracy although no worse than any other large organisation, limited and diminishing budgets, sometimes change happens at the whim of politicians
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
Pros – It's a really large department that covers lots of interesting areas including science, innovation, promoting growth etc.. Lots of interesting policy areas to work in, work-life balance was fine and it wasn't too bureaucratic for government.
Cons – It's not a very diverse department and there are a lot of people counting down the clock to retirement, lots of areas where more progress could be made with an injection of more smart, energetic staff.
Advice to Senior Management – Better management including getting rid of the dead wood would improve the atmosphere and improve people's work ethic. There's a lot of presenteeism and a culture of ineffective management. Compared to other UK govt departments it feels very staid.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
Pros – Great teams, great place to work.
I learnt a lot about the inner workings of governement departments and the integral role that individual ministers play in the underpinning policies of business in the UK and relations with foreign companies and governments.
Cons – None that I can think of
