I have been working at BJC HealthCare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work environment where (if you have such a job) you can work from home some days during the week. The company accommodates schedules well.

    Cons

The company is mired in red tape on the Information Services side of business and to get even the simplest of tasks completed seem almost insurmountable. Middle management, for the most part, is ineffective and a cause for the low moral. The philosophy at this organization is that management personnel does NOT necessarily need to know anything about I.T. in order to "lead" the various groups within Information Services. I, along with others, find this vexing.

    Pros

Great company to work for overall. They employ highly intelligent and skilled employees and project resources. Great corporate culture. Management treats their employees with respect and dignity. Management also seeks input from employees at all levels. It is a great place to gain visibility with leadership no matter your title or role.

    Cons

No cons. It can be challenging to get a job there because it is a highly sought-after company and because of the high level of employee retainment, job openings are at a premium.

I worked at BJC HealthCare full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good experience to have. Wide variety of technologies to learn and support.

    Cons

Other than having a job period, there is little stability. You can apply, interview for, and accept a position to work at a specific location/hospital out west... and then end up being moved to a traveling position near Illinois within months after starting. They will not consult you nor give you notice of your job changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employment is voluntary. Do not expect to keep good techs when their job duties and locations that were originally interviewed for are changed on a whim without notice or discussion with the employee. This is not the military, and most employees work family lives and children's school/daycare around their work schedule and location. Our families come before you moving techs around due to misguided decisions and layoffs.

WWathWwathc out for the contracting staff

I worked at BJC HealthCare full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Wasn't there long enough to realize any.

    Cons

I was hired in a Contract Manager....a job that appears to be always open. There is a reason for that. The contract office is mainly women. If they don't like you, they will trump up something to get rid of you...in my case it was that I made a sexually offensive comment to someone then laughed in their face when they supposedly confronted me about it. I always addressed everyone as "yes Ma'am...no, Ma'am....yes, sir...no sir." I never used profanity. But I ran afoul of the mostly female contracting staff. And when they were firing me I asked the to tell me what I supposedly said and who I said it to. They refused to answer either question.

I have been working at BJC HealthCare full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A positive outlook on work/life balance, near bleeding edge technology for some platforms and a definite local positive impact for your job.

    Cons

Structure, political infighting and attrition to theoretically higher paying positions are the biggest 'cons' to working in IT at BJC. Be prepared to jump from topic-topic quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Further emphasize the local impact of projects; avoid marginalizing your skilled employees.

I have been working at BJC HealthCare full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

BJC has some of the best staff I have ever encountered. They are devoted to taking care of their patients and helping each other. The mission of providing the best care is foremost in the staff's thoughts and actions.

    Cons

Leadership, especially senior leadership needs to walk the talk. For all the talk about values, specifically integrity that they did at my organization, senior leaders frequently fail to behave in a manner that appears to be in alignment with the values. We just had a layoff to save money by eliminating FTEs yet most of the positions that they "eliminated" are now posted online and are being refilled. Its really disappointing.
