I have been working at BKD full-time

    Pros

BKD participates in a employee satisfaction survey every year and has consistently received high scores.

    Cons

The most glaring exclusion from the employee satisfaction survey is benefits. In particular, BKD's self-funded health insurance program. If you are young, healthy and single, BKD might not be a bad place to get your start. Raising a family on BKD's health insurance can be a real challenge.

    Advice to Management

BKD is continually looking for ways to attract qualified talent. I know people who have come to BKD from other companies. They had to think long and hard about whether or not they wanted to give up their current employer's health insurance to work for BKD.

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many intelligent people across all departments. Makes it interesting to dig into more technical topics. Decent clients and good CPE programming.

    Cons

Compensation seems below average for hours required, nk bonuses. Seems like partners maintain a bottom line focus rather than a big picture focus.

    Advice to Management

Diversify yourselves. Reward employees, especially the ones killing themselves in total hours. Need to do something about very poor staff\senior retention rates.

I worked at BKD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule outside of busy season. Great management and work environment. Great people.

    Cons

Pay is below market. No bonuses. Raises lower than peers. Correlation between performance and pay not so clear, but part of public accounting.

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I work with are nice and easy to get along with. Also, easy access to excellent technology, resources, training and CPE opportunities.

    Cons

Salary is low for the amount of work you do, no 401k match, and no bonus program. Also there is a clique- if you're in it your golden, if not you have to work twice as hard to get the same recognition.

    Advice to Management

Implement some type of bonus program. The base pay is fair for the area, but raises are small and there is no bonus potential. The economy is up, revenues are improving-- let some of those financial rewards flow to the people putting in the extra hours.

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Hands down the best public accounting firm to get experience in Arkansas. You get to see a variety of clients and it's nice to have the BKD name behind you when you move on. Raises are definitely better than what you would get in private practice.

    Cons

Poor work life balance (at least my my niche). It is different depending on the niche you're in. This place is the most gossipy place I've ever worked for. You'd think that a place that employees MBAs and CPAs would be different, but it's not. Don't tell ANYONE anything you don't mind everyone knowing. No recognition for a job well done(at least in my niche). New staff can be blackballed almost immediately. For example, if a brand new staff is slow on a job(which should be expected) the in charges will gossip to everyone and it results in the new staff not being picked up on jobs. You have to prove yourself and do it very quickly.

    I worked at BKD full-time

    Pros

Good work environment and great co-workers. A lot of opportunities for career growth and relocation options. Had some flexibility in work schedules depending on supervisor.

    Cons

Low starting salaries for non CPA employees.

Many good people, but overly traditional company

    Pros

(1)The people are generally good to work with and your superiors make you feel appreciated (with words, if not with money) (2) Some increased flexibility in recent years with time off and work-life balance

    Cons

    (1) The general sense is that compensation is not reflective of performance (2) Rigid, traditional company with limited flexibility to reward high performers (3) Performance management system give employees no sense of where they stand relative to colleagues, and it is very stiff and traditional

    Advice to Management

As we all learned in undergraduate economics class, incentives matter. Do a better job of measuring and rewarding good performance.
