I have been working at BKD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Intelligent partners and senior managers Strong training and ample opportunities to learn on your own through BKDU (online training resource) Great opportunity to work on various projects

    Cons

The firm lacks empathy. The firm views employees as "machines" not as "human beings." The motto "People First" is not true. What comes first to the firm is the bottom line. Overemphasis on budgets and billable hours. The firm emphasis on budgets and billable hours is disheartening. I see a great number of employees discouraged and overwhelmed by budgets/billable hours and expectations on projects to the point the work suffers, and the employee quits. Which leads to being understaffed and a poorer work product. Mediocre benefits and poor employee engagement. The firm does not offer yearly bonuses only profit sharing after two years of employment. The amount you receive from profit sharing is treated as a 401k match. Also, Below average maternity leave. In addition, the firm expects individuals to work 60+ hours a week. However, they are not willing to buy dinner more than 2-3 days week even though you literally "live at the office." Lastly, the firm lacks events like "Casual Friday."

    Advice to Management

Become a firm that shows and gives empathy towards your employees. Improve the benefits and employee engagement activities. I strongly believe if the employees are shown empathy and improved benefits as management you'll see increased employee retention and improved work product. Please listen to your employees about their desires for the firm and stop saying "no" to everything, but become a firm that comes up with solutions.

I worked at BKD part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Joplin is a small office with great people to work with. They take time to help when you are struggling and are just fun to work with.

    Cons

Tax season makes for some long hours but the people make it not so bad, plus during the tax season they always have food brought in on Saturday.

I have been working at BKD full-time

    Pros

BKD participates in a employee satisfaction survey every year and has consistently received high scores.

    Cons

The most glaring exclusion from the employee satisfaction survey is benefits. In particular, BKD's self-funded health insurance program. If you are young, healthy and single, BKD might not be a bad place to get your start. Raising a family on BKD's health insurance can be a real challenge.

    Advice to Management

BKD is continually looking for ways to attract qualified talent. I know people who have come to BKD from other companies. They had to think long and hard about whether or not they wanted to give up their current employer's health insurance to work for BKD.

I have been working at BKD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many intelligent people across all departments. Makes it interesting to dig into more technical topics. Decent clients and good CPE programming.

    Cons

Compensation seems below average for hours required, nk bonuses. Seems like partners maintain a bottom line focus rather than a big picture focus.

    Advice to Management

Diversify yourselves. Reward employees, especially the ones killing themselves in total hours. Need to do something about very poor staff\senior retention rates.

    Pros

Some nice people to work with. Great experience. Due to being understaffed an accountant will get a lot of hands on experience dealing with controllers and CFO's. It is a national firm.

    Cons

Very understaffed and bottomline focused. Many in-charges had one year or less experience with no manager. Many of the associates/seniors are unwelcoming to other associates. In their reviews, many of the bad parts could be avoided by changes made up top. Also just as a lot of public accounting firms it is cut throat. Very unorganized training even though they did have us put up at a nice hotel. Hardly any room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees and stop being so bottomline focused. You might just see work efficiency go up just like as seen in several experiments. I am a woman and I appreciate the sky initiative but this does favor women and is condoning the same actions that we have fought against men doing for all these years. Everyone should be treated as an equal with no special privileges.

    Pros

Great people to work with and many people close to your age. Opportunity to work in many different industries and opportunity for career advancement.

    Cons

Work life balance during busy season is not ideal, but it's not horrible.

    Pros

The firm values integrity, it's people and work - life balance. The firm has a strong set of values. Great firm

    Cons

This is a public accounting firm. Long hours and travel at times but this is the life we chose. However, rewarded for hard work.
