Sometimes the company ignores the strength it has in it's people, often makes decisions and changes based on the next quarter's results

Limited avenues of career growth if you like technology more than management

Advice to Senior Management
Come out of BMC and you would know you are not even worth peanuts :)
Pros
You could work from home, but when in an office, most were in decent places that were accessible. Technical colleagues were good and you could build a network. If you were part of certain product groups, you could find yourself in a family, but that family was usually hated by Houston. I learned a lot, but it wasn't easy to manage; you were on your own.
Cons
Random huge layoffs, which made life too uncertain. Bob B. only cared about the last 1-2 acquisitions - older products were supposed to make money with no attention or support. The mainframe BU was considered just a cash cow - don't invest in it, don't respect the people doing the work. Politics was everything and it helped a lot to be from TX. When I started in '00, it was actually a culture of honesty, integrity and good intentions. It went downhill fast from there and now is sort of a cesspool.
Advice to Senior Management
The BOD should dump Bob B and his associates and bring in people who haven't already cashed in and don't care. Understand that the people ARE your business and support them. Understand what they are good at and passionate about and place them in those positions, so you create super-stars. Don't overload people. Make layoffs more transparent and far less frequent. Get rid of most of middle mgmt and invest in individual contributors. Create an IC path that parallels mgmt so good technicians don't have to turn into bad managers.
Pros
Dynamic R&D environment where high performers are recognized with bonus compensation not seen in other companies this size and stability. Aggressive current growth with good probability of continued growth. Conglomerate like structure has cash cow products which are successfully funding more innovating new products.
Cons
Still dealing with incorporating a division of acquisitions into a coherent system. Suffers from legacy managerial structure as well as painful legacy systems, in great contrast to the innovation in its leading products. Has definite problems deciding on priorities between quality and stability and greenfield growth.
Note that experiences reported by people will vary greatly by the location and group they are in. Some areas of BMC are stagnant and political, others aggressively technocratic.
Advice to Senior Management
Need to reconcile what is advocated for employees to do versus what they are rewarded and recognized for doing.
Pros
Strong management, strong vision, good finances. The leadership makes tough decisions to try to remain competitive. The balance sheet ensures you have runway to develop longer term deals.
Cons
I don't think that they are as competitive as they need to be. The competition on one end is already engaged in accounts due to commodity products or on the other end nimble with leading edge technology.
Advice to Senior Management
Give the reps larger territories to ensure that they have ample opportunities. Find a commodity product through acquisition (or being acquired) to give the reps a foot in the door in more accounts.
Pros
Growth, money, market share, good management, BMC looks for hardworking people and pay for it.
Cons
HEARD of corporate polotics. Doesn't mean it's bad since I HEAR most companies have it worse.
Advice to Senior Management
Some reorg changes don't need to be as often.
Pros
Great co-workers and benefits. Great stock growth.
Cons
All decisions are top-down and individual innovation is ignored until it becomes the idea of someone at the top.
Advice to Senior Management
Find out what people at the lower levels are doing. Let them execute their ideas and benefit from them.
Pros
Work from home, great environment for work and extra curricular activities.
A company worth recommending.
Cons
Higher work expectation from employees
Advice to Senior Management
Company should improve on ways to distribute work among employees in a way to avoid burn outs at times.
