I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

Company growing fast - stable job and good chance to advance career.

The company got into the whole BSM story very early, and has had a lot of success at selling this to customers. Our customer base is constantly growing, and that makes for a lot of work and stable product development jobs.

The possible risk to a job here is that there is a trend to move work to the India office, and I would estimate that in another 3-4 years most of the work will move there. So existing employees need to create a place for them in a leaner environment.

    Cons

Outdated technology. Very IT specific work. if you understand how IT organizations work, or have good working knowledge about datacenters and all it takes to manage them, you will enjoy this work. Otherwise you will have to forget about all the neat stuff being done out there by companies like Google and Facebook. No place for that in this company.

No work is done on the cutting edge. The perspective is to gain customers, not to lead on technology front.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow people to move between difference job functions, across engineering and marketing and sales. Not much support for that currently. Company does not seem to be interested in encouraging employees to do so.

    I worked at BMC Software

    Pros

I have a feeling that if you work in one of the company's two main offices, located in Texas or India, the meeting times may be more manageable.

    Cons

I'd heard about blame-storming, but I had never experienced it before being hired at BMC. If you know how to function in that kind of environment, go for it. I would also tell any new hire at BMC to talk to a trusted HR person to help them keep track of all the information that would be necessary to form a case for why your being fired is inappropriate. I would say set aside a good hour per day to devote to your note takings -- your management is doing this so should you be.

After working there, I had several recruiters comment that BMC has a habit of calling meetings that you must attend. The example given was a meeting notice that went out at about 5pm on the day a person was leaving for vacation, for a mandatory 6-7pm meeting. It was presented as a pervasive corporate habit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The in fighting and lack of employee satisfaction are affecting overall product quality.

I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

good products - good product strategy

    Cons

Terrible Sales Management - Sales People go to BMC to die - It is a place for order takers not sales people. Bladelogic management is not customer focused - it is only about making a sale.
Poor compensation. Not real smart people especially in sales management. If you want to be No. 1 in your lower division math class - this is the place for you !

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    try selling Cutco Knifes

I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

Your work makes difference to very large number of users
Decent development processes that let you concentrate on doing the job (relatively)
    Industry leader in several areas
    Very flexible (home\office) time
    Decent work environment

    Cons

    Less innovation
Immature product management - what software are you developing?
    Limited opportunities in advancing career
Growing emphasis on india development center
    Collection of acquisitions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve product management by investing in competent people
Get real about process of innovation (bold and aggressive experimentation, failure is ok etc)
Promote transparency and sharing of information by investing into collaborative technologies- naturally that's the way knowledge bees prefer
Rethink about ergonomics of the environment from software development point of view - worthy investment

I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

good products and a good overall solution

    Cons

sales people and sales management are some of the worst I have ever come across. The sales management team is very weak, highly political. It is a Houston based technology company so how many good technology companies have come out of Houston. The upper sales management is really bad. Putting a Bladelogic guy in with his posse won't help - too many bad managers in between. It is worst on the west coast. The management team has run out more good sales people because it is so bad.
Compensation is OK so in a way you get what you pay for. They are also known for not paying sales people commisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of all the sales managers and VP's and start with a new team.

I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

Overall it's a decent place to work for, they have been successful in integrating new companies and executing well on their BSM strategy.

    Cons

Infrastructure software is not a Hot growth area, all the other companies which BMC competes are big companies like HP, IBM and CA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to encourage more innovation.

Huge corporate upside, but mid-level management styles are caught up in hierarchical and bureaucratic models

I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

BMC has got a great upside if the legacy culture and leadership style could get out of the way.

    Cons

Managing "up" is the only thing that maaters. Innovation and "get it done" attitude is punished by mid-level managers that have made careers by managing-up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage down, the people on your team need to be your priority. Hanging on to power roles, without a vision to drive the team, is hurting the organization.

I have been working at BMC Software

    Pros

Most Mainframe areas of software development allow considerable flexability in work hours, and freedom to work in interesting areas.

    Cons

Managament has little understanding of the work people are doing so employees need to be able to judge their own contrubution and development and be satisified with that judgement. Education and training is OJT and self directed with online courses weak. Budget constraints fail to provide growth in professional societies or confrence attendance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Frequent layoffs create an atmosphere of risk avoidance from employees and lower management. Midlevel and upper management need to get out among the emplyees and spend time in informal settings to find out what is gong on.
