One of the best companies I have worked for, still room for improvement, but better than most I have worked for.

I have been working at BMO Harris Bank full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

This company has a 401K (5% match) and a pension with a sliding scale (3% to 8%) based on you age and years worked--I started at M&I Corp which was purchased by BMO....which was/is better ? It is a toss-up. Lateral moves are easy and common. Nice vacation and sick time policy, pay is on par with banks of the same size I would say.

    Cons

Difficult to move up in the company if management wants you somewhere else. Certain areas or departments are tightcast and once in those departments, you can only move laterally. Raises are almost non-existent, bonus or STIP's Short Term Incentive Funds, are given, but your base pay stays the same.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to bring back raises or good employees will leave.

I worked at BMO Harris Bank full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company was very progressive in ideas. I was impressed with how much the organization embraced new ideas.

    Cons

I was excited when BMO took over my organization. Unfortunately, it didn't make a big difference to me because my old management went too bringing their stale ideas and "it will never work" attitude. They lost me in the process. Sad that I had to move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes management is the problem, not the staff. When there is high turn over in a dept, the leadership is at fault.

I have been working at BMO Harris Bank full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Best in class health, dental, vision, life insurance benefits out there. Work/life balance second to none. 136 hours of vacation time off the bat per year for full-time employees. 80 additional hours for sick and illness occurrences.

It's ultimately a sales job. So persistence in WANTING to EXCEED goals is where you'll make money in commission. Commission for bankers is paid every month, which is great because your month to month cash flow can potentially be higher and that's what makes this job more rewarding. In the banking industry, only Chase Bank pays its bankers every month in commission.

    Cons

Above average administrative work on a day to day basis for a sales job. But I guess that comes with the territory of having an above average base salary for a salary plus commission job. Micro managing is practiced. This is where your patience will be tested. Your relationship with your manager, or who your manager is, or simply how you play your cards in the "corporate" world will either make or break you in this job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

BMO has an old school Chase sales approach. Very bad tactic. Focus more on "wowing" the customer with service, build rapport and trust that way, and that approach guide and lead your sales. Decrease sales goals, maybe even adjust the pay out scales accordingly to avoid higher commission checks need be to mKe yo the difference. Pump the breaks a tad on the micro managing. Realistically no one likes it, and it creates a high turnover ratio and makes your place a revolving door.

I worked at BMO Harris Bank full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits were great, opportunity for advancement, and decent training.

    Cons

Not saying this out of spite, but they will let someone go without reservations. As a manager, I was told by my boss on several occasions to let one go just to cut hours. Eventually, my position fell in the same category.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring that people have families and that BMO is not just a career but a livelyhood.

Their technology is light years behind the competition; Still use a DOS based system and just started using Salesforce-NOT effective for proactively profiling clients.
