I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Overall not a bad job. Great pay and benefits. if you have the seniority, you can choose jobs that give a better schedule but the pay is less.

    Cons

Training program could be better, too much of an "us and them" attitude in management. No accountability for bad management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be promoted exclusively from within and only after at least a year if enployment. It takes someone who knows how to effectively do this job to manage it properly. I see time and time again this company waste so much money due to poor management.

    Pros

Endless opportunities for those willing to put forth the effort.

    Cons

Very competitive and political, come promotion time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Would like to see a larger separation in ICP payout, for on Target and an Exceeds, in the year end review process.

I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a career minded organization and one of the last few Graduation to Grave jobs you can get in today's society. You can be as successful as you aspire to be as long as you "play the game".

    Cons

Work schedules and hours for operations employees are wildly erratic.

Exempt/office employees face glass celings depending upon role and entry point into company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to more universally enforce rules and policies across the board to create cohesion in workgroups

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Entry level position. Can craft transfer after a year of service. Good railroad retirement. Medical benefits after 90 days. Dental and vision after a year.

    Cons

No accountability! Co-workers do as they please. Ramps are not organized. when ramp gets busy they can force you to work another 8 hours for a total 16 hour days

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people with respect and not just a number.

I worked at BNSF Railway full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Money, that's it!!!!! Decent but not close to enough for the time spent away.

    Cons

Terrible structure. All senerity. Do not apply for this company in what seems like every position, if you favor family, friends and a life. Your life consists of gas station food, terrible hotel with no fridges and bosses high up who could care less about the pee ons we are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a new structure in which people can spend more time with their loved ones. Terrible to have people work for this company that only see their family 100 days out of the year.

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Tons of opportunity to learn about rail transportation. Salary is decent, bonus is not so great, but the company pension & railroad retirement keep the flock in place.

    Cons

There is no shortage of hours, but this is the norm in the transportation industry. Can rise to mid-level management fairly quickly, but politics prevent meaningful promotions. Simmering in middle management can be frustrating for talented individuals, and BNSF excels at this. The company does not maximize its talent. BNSF is big on selling its Leadership Model, and small on actually employing it on a day-to-day basis. Bonus program is based on company performance, so high performers are almost never rewarded for the value they've brought to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit promoting based on one's ability to politic. You have a huge talent pool that is going unused, while new and untested/unproven folks are being promoted.

    Pros

They don't make the process easy. You can work comfortably with your employees cause it's designed to eliminate the weak and keep the strong.

    Cons

Having a troubled past will hurt you.
