I have joined bp recently and i am very dissapointed in the quality of work they require you to perform and the level of training. there are no procedures or systems that you can plan your work according to...you are just thrown in there and expedcted to cope and understand.. there are no benchmarks for any type of work...even though i clearly stated on my cv that i didnt have experience of certain types of work i was expected to participate in their planing and operation!!! this is dangerous!
the training is quite hit and miss and again there is no benchmark to judge the learning....i am seriously disapointed in the training as even service companies have a million times better training.
i have to date never been given a job description...everything is hidden in vagueness and when you join as an experienced hire you are required to make sense of it yourself. no formal introduction has been given as to how the subsurface disciplines integrate and interact with each other....you ask ten different people and they will all give you different answers.........bp are hiring like crazy right now but if you want to have a clear understanding of your job and want good training this is definately not the place to come to....and i understand from others that the salary is also not that great.
Advice to Senior Management
develop a system/procedures and standards...dont expect poeple to come in and pick up on their own....this can lead to disasters....
Pros
international brand od reputation and known
Cons
work life balance is really bad
Advice to Senior Management
more reviews and expectation setting
Pros
BP is a great place to start a career. They will train you, expose you to many different aspects/places in the E&P world, and provide you with the tools to succeed in your job. BP has so many different producing areas in their portfolio that you gain a wide range of skills over a very short time frame.
Cons
Very large company so things move very slowly. It takes a long time to accomplish anything and that can be frustrating at times. If you do work at BP make sure you are proactive in everything you do, from your technical training to your work... otherwise you can become a number and that does you no good.
Pros
Big stable company for working
Cons
Very big company which the changes are very hard there to happen. So you should restrictedly obey the defined values.
Pros
The salary is good. The advance training your recieve is excellent. The insurance is good as is the medical care
Cons
no time off to live a personal life, days off often cancelled , vacation non-existant, work days 18 hours, no personal communication allowed while on ship. your not allowed personal computer communication or phone calls while on the ship. The days working and days off schedual is ignored. I haven't been off the payroll ship in the gulf except for training, doctors appoinments and a few other short assignments in 18 plus months.
Advice to Senior Management
All members from top management on the ship need to have there days off manditory and respected as time off. Away from work and communication from work. The management out on ships should be made to leave work and go ashore. As it was written in the work contract. The Payroll direct diposits, inventory controll, damage payouts, all done by computer and satellite link should be done at a on-shore office not on the ship. this would save money and time
Pros
Common process and systems worldwide. Able to communicate with other BP counterparts around the world.
Cons
Large global organization. New initiatives take longer to implement due to the diverse stakeholder needs around the world. Leads to beauracracy.
Advice to Senior Management
Following the 2010 oil spill in Gulf of Mexico, the leadership had to change. The new leadership still has to keep a sharp acumen of running an oil and gas business.
Pros
My work reduces risk in BP's GoM offshore operations.
Cons
Lack of communication up and down upstream in how are work reduces risk and ensures safety in our operation
Pros
people, processes, work to life balance, OK pay, good benefits, flex days
Cons
micromanagment, changing directions faster than NASCAR car turns left
Advice to Senior Management
At this stage you gotta start afresh!
Pros
Pay is good
Benefits are good
Alternate work schedule is great
Many good people to work with
Cons
Incompetent leadership within supply chain
Promotion is based on "who you know NOT what you know"
Supply Chain is one grade above premitive
Poor planning and poor execution
It is worse than congress when it comes to working together and executing plans
Hiring people, warm boddies, just to fill positions
Unfair pay practiices even within people within the same grade level
Advice to Senior Management
You have saturated the company with "warm bodies" in response to the gulf incident. It would be wise to focus on the good people who run everyday's work and incentivize them instead of paying hi-dollar salaries for newbies who know nothing about the business. HR needs more legs to stand on as they are pretty much considered administrative jobs. Empower your managers to make decisions as they know more than many of the directors who are nothing but figureheads.
