    I worked at BSO

    Pros

The atmosphere and co-workers are both top notch - challenging, supportive, and fun. And there is no better place to hear classical music then at Symphony Hall - the acoustics are so rich and full of life, that each note is magical. My department head and direct supervisor were both talented and supportive and allowed me to take on as much responsibility as I could handle at each stage of the learning process.

    Cons

It's a non-profit, so the pay is not very great - this was a base + commission position, so there was the ability to increase pay through extraordinary effort, but as a newcomer I was not getting the best leads available. The best leads, naturally, went to those who put in their service for several years. When I secured a full time job during the day, in the accounting field, I asked to switch to the Ushering staff because I just could not sit at a desk, staring at a computer for 14 hours a day. The head of the department helped me secure that new position without hesitation.

I worked at BSO (less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone I worked with at Tanglewood was unique, friendly, extremely capable and hard working.
Most employees and musicians were driven to bring excellent music performances to the public, and succeeded.
New conductor Andris Nelsons brings some fresh air to the scene.

    Cons

Work-life balance is difficult, though this seems to be typical in most arts management positions.
Could be more room for alternative programming, not just classical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at BSO as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

All of the staff, including senior management, are very thankful and supportive of interns and their contributions. There are plenty of opportunities to get hands on experience, ask questions, and speak with staff from other departments. The atmosphere is professional and positive, I always enjoyed going in to the office. Perks such as free tickets to some BSO and Pops concerts also add value to the experience.

    Cons

Because the organization is such a great place to work, it is very competitive to enter. There are not many opportunities for advancement post internship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A positive supportive work environment starts at the top, and the management at BSO does a wonderful job of setting the tone. I appreciate that they always take the time to thank people for their contributions and speak with interns about their work.

I have been working at BSO

    Pros

Being around the music is fantastic and the benefits package is superb

    Cons

I had a friend that worked in the marketing and PR department and was told that it was a revolving door in a week. She had a miserable experience working with some horrible bosses. She was glad to get out of there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look into your culture and remove the bad apples in leadership.

I worked at BSO full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They offer great health benefits, as you get the same insurance options that the musicians get. Staff also have access to free tickets to the BSO, which I encourage you to take advantage of, as the orchestra is second to none. You also get to work alongside talented, hard-working colleagues.

    Cons

I had a positive experience. As in all organizations, some departments are better than others. Depending on where your office is located, it can be noisy when there are concerts during the day as the audiences filter in and out.
