I have been working at Babcock part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Well paid, interesting work. Opportunities for promotion.

    Cons

Persecutory ethos from top down. Staff constantly under threat of disciplinary action for almost everything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage positive atmosphere. Cut back threats of discipline. `reduce excessive risk assessment.

Severely lacking in directors that can demonstrate effective leadership

I have been working at Babcock full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some great talented engineers to work with that really know their stuff. Huge variety of interesting work.
Friendly helpful atmosphere to work in at the coal face.

    Cons

Poor pay - this is regularly laughed off by senior management and ignored.
    No communication from on high
Poor leadership at director level and absolutely no attempt by Babcock to engage with employees - particularly important when the business relies on multi site working.
IT system that doesn't work to its full potential and an IT dept making profit for itself from other business units
HR dept that is stuck in the 80's and treats it's graduates with contempt
Lack of investment in tools for designers - would you be happy if a plumber turned up at your house without the right tools?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start looking after your people, pay them the salaries they deserve and start to earn the trust and respect of your staff.

I have been working at Babcock

    Pros

Good people to work with, opportunity to advance if you want to. Intelligent, pleasant people. You can challenge yourself as much or as little as you want.

    Cons

Not many. I think the lack of salary increases this year may have ruffled feathers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some political wankers. Bit like airbus. Otherwise good.

If you like engineering and living in a lovely area of England - this is the place to work!

I have been working at Babcock

    Pros

If you want to live in Devon and be involved in big engineering projects there's not much else in the way of competition.

    Cons

Lack of competition with other employers in the area means that wages are lower than the national average for similar work. And it's not as if living in the South West is particularly cheap. Housing costs, utility bills and transport, for example, are very expensive. Also great reliance on Ministry of Defence and Royal Naval work means that future workload can be changed at the whim of the government, which leads to much uncertainty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep talking to the workforce. Effective two way communication can make or break a business.
