Great place to work -- if you're a consultant

    Pros

If you're a consuktant, Bain & Company will teach you a lot, give you amazing opportunities (such as, you can basically pick any one of their 51 offices world-wide for a six-month case) and introduce you to a lot of important people. If you're not a consultant, the company will still promise you many of these great opportunities, but that's all just a lot of talk.

    Cons

A very demanding schedule and pace, with employees pressure tested all the time. If you're part of "Consulting Support Services" (like me) you're just a cog in a machine. For example, consultants get "professional development" talks with their bosse every six months or so, I have my first such talk after six years on the job. Consultanst are made part of Baion's alumni network right away -- CSS staff like me will never be part of that network, even if we work here 20 years..

    Advice to Management

Be honest about the split between the consultant and CSS sides of the business, and don't over promise and under deliver. I keep hearing how having Bain & Company on my resume is "very powerful," yet in three years of job hunting it has not opened any doors for me. To the contrary, it means I have to spend 15 minutes explaining Mitt Romney (and Meg Whitman's) ties to the firm, and the difference between Bain & Company and Bain Capital.

    Pros

Treated as a full-time employee and given full-set of responsibilities (no watered-down tasks), great regimented training program and events for interns, transparent and clear (and frequent) feedback mechanisms inspire personal and professional growth

    Cons

Experience is very dependent on your specific case assignment (including client, supervisor, team, etc.), although internship managers do screen the cases very carefully

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work! Upper-level management did a great job at reaching out to interns and making sure we felt part of the team and company. This really meant a lot!

    Pros

Incredibly strong professional development focus (without being overly critical!!)
    Congenial, intelligent peers
Once you work here, getting a job somewhere else is relatively easy (combination of the network and the brand name)
The job responsibilities change considerably each year you stay

    Cons

    Long hours
Can feel like a boy's club (sometimes it feels like there's a popular kid table full of the loud, boisterous ones)

    Advice to Management

Work hard to maintain connection to alums, as the network is one of the most salient reasons to join Bain
