I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best part about working at Bain is the people. The people make the fantastic culture, provide wonderful professional development and coaching opportunities, and make the job fun. The people are incredibly smart, contributing to a stimulating and challenging work environment. Additionally, Bain's clients include the top companies in most industries, so there is always an opportunity to work on very interesting, challenging and important business issues. Finally, given the project nature of the work, there is tons of variety, providing a new and interesting business problem to work on every 3-6 months.

    Cons

The negatives of the job include travel and long hours. Many clients are not based near the office and require some regular travel. This can get tiring week-in and week-out. The hours can also get long, depending on the project (65+/week). However, neither of these two factors is necessarily the case. There are plenty of locally-based or light travel options, and while some weeks have long hours, they are balanced by shorter weeks or down-time in between projects. Finally, given the size of the company, advancement is very structructured without much room for flexibility to accelerate or decelerate based on individual needs and abilities. For those who like stability and structure, this could be a positive thing.

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Phenomenal opportunities for professional growth and career development. The partners I work with are truly invested in me and my success. Ability to work on the most challenging problems that executives are facing - and to develop practical solutions that have significant impact. Firm invests in people for the long-term.

    Cons

This is a top tier professional services firm, so you need to understand that client needs are top priority and this is not a 9-5 job. Within management consulting, I think Bain does as good a job (if not better) than most at helping manage work/life balance, but ultimately it's up to the individual employee to be assertive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure we continue to invest in support services as we grow.

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to really make a difference. You get significant responsibility to help tackle your clients most challenging problems. Bain has a very supportive environment where your team, your supervisors and your mentors all care about developing you and helping you build your skills and your career. Also, it is a genuinely fun place to work - at the end of the day, it's the people that make the difference

    Cons

The travel can get old at times, but Bain works hard to ensure the overall lifestyle can be sustainable

I have been working at Bain & Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong focus on people & culture, including fostering office & class communities, a best-in-class training program, and firm-wide events such as Bain World Cup. Fantastic colleagues. Highly engaging work on interesting problems across a range of industries and topics. Efforts to make the job as sustainable as possible.

    Cons

The unavoidable downsides of consulting: travel (though less frequent / less far than at many competing firms) and unpredictable / highly variable hours. Some comp/benefits/perks not as good as at competitors.
