I worked at Baker Botts full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working on complicated matters for sophisticated clients--you get access to better cases, better funding, and better training in Texas.

    Cons

Partnership is mostly a dream--be happy to work hard and get paid well and leave it at that. You're getting experience and access to clients with complicated cases and big budgets that you just won't see at less prestigious firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management is already aware that they are aloof and separated from the associates--they aren't interested in my advice

    Pros

Very smart people; lots of responsibility & client contact early on

    Cons

Management - it's all about the profits. Lip service paid to many things. Being a lawyer is no longer treated as a profession. Ridiculous hours are very detrimental to your physical health.

    Pros

For the most part, great people to work with.

    Cons

Gross underpayment for my position, misalignment of organizational goals with departmental goals, not enough feedback on performance, rewards (i.e. promotions, raises) not consistent or aligned with performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Baker Botts

    Pros

I especially appreciate the quality of work, the people, the flexibility of my working hours, the training, and the attention to professional development. Baker Botts is open with associates about their progress and whether they are on the right track. The firm encourages pro bono and does not limit the number of pro bono hours that count toward billables. There are endless opportunities for professional networking and community involvement. There are also amazing office perks.

    Cons

I cannot think of any downsides. Personal initiative is key.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I love my job. I appreciate the opportunities that I have here to become a great lawyer. I also appreciate the formal and informal mentoring available.
