Poor IT Management !!! - Only Out For Themselves!

IT Project Manager (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Baker Hughes full-time for more than 10 years

ProsHaving a job in a bad economy. Outside of that, There are no good reasons to work in Baker Hughes IT right now.

ConsIT Management from lower line managers to Directors are only interested in looking good to Vice Presidents and the next layer of the organizational structure so they can advance their careers. Upper Management is being told what sounds good not what is really going on. There are so many problems from full time employees being over worked to products being deployed with many issues just so a project deadline is met and someone can reap the "reward" of project completion. Managers are allowing flawed product deployment. They are turning their head and saying "I don't know" so there is no ownership of the problem.

Unrealistic guidelines
Unrealistic project deadlines
Layoffs
Hiring cheap labor in Kuala Lumpur
Outsourcing jobs to India
Poor IT Support
No longer a good organization to work for!

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to employee surveys! You will more than likely find out what is going on in your IT organization.

Unethical and all round awful place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Baker Hughes full-time for more than a year

ProsSome genuinely good people working there

ConsSenior management generally consists of 'friends appointing friends'
Massive blame culture (scapegoating)
Genuine enmity from senior managements to anyone that points out errors
Lack of expertise in senior management
Ignores employee needs
No communication or outright deception by senior management
Falsification of records to meet government requirements is commonplace
False data sent by individual geomarkets to regions and HQ
Substandard pay but only certain people get raises
No vision for the future
Massively understaffed
Direct lies told to clients when bidding and reporting on work
Expectation that a person only has the Company in their life
Ridiculous expectations
Everythign either has no priority or must be done tommorrow. No middle ground

Advice to Senior ManagementActually run a company not a club for your friends that victimizes anyone who is not in your little clique

families are torn apart by this company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Baker Hughes

Prosgood money that is the only pro

Consunable to have a family life at all. Told 5 days off 10 on when hired. Then never happens. Family torn apart by this.

Advice to Senior ManagementCare about the employees that make you money. There are too many families being broke apart because of your day off policies. Very unfair and uncaring company

Micro managed by Houston head office

Administrative (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at Baker Hughes full-time for less than a year

ProsThe people I worked with were great. The salary was acceptable. The benefits were average, nothing special. The location was central and easily accessible by public transit.

ConsHouston head office did not understand the working culture of Calgary especially around Stampede time. Forced to use very inefficient software that made simple tasks impossible to accomplish. Not provided training for said software despite asking numerous times. Working here would only be useful to keep you employed while you look elsewhere. HR is completely inefficient and unresponsive, and also based in Houston. I would NOT recommend this place to friends.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease place some value on your lower level employees, sometimes they can see the bigger picture and can see simple solutions to problems. Stop ignoring lower level employees when they make a complaint. Continually replacing your lower level staff is a very inefficient way to conduct business.

The IT department is an absolute disaster.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Baker Hughes full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat benefits. Most people are friendly and fun to work with.

ConsBaker Hughes used to be a great, employee centered, place to work. It has turned away from that and currently has no loyalty or respect for employees.

The IT department is an absolute disaster. The CIO is clueless and is more concerned with building his resume than with actually providing the business with what they need/want.

IT is in a constant state of reorg and a constant state of workforce reduction. It's over budget and the only way they know how to reduce expense is to lay people off. They have eliminated, or lost, most people who have any knowledge and expect the remaining few to quickly pick up everything. They are outsourcing most new development. After a big push, 3 years ago, to get rid of 'shadow IT' groups within the business, many parts of the business are once again starting to do their own development, because IT will not / cannot give them what they need.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire the CIO. Stop treating employees like a number. Learn the value of retaining knowledgeable employees.
