Make and save your money during peak demand, laid off when demand slacks.

Electronic Technician (Former Employee)
Oklahoma City, OK

I worked at Baker Hughes full-time for more than a year

ProsChallenging job, operating and repairing expensive instrumentation that is put thousands of feet down a well hole. Pay is ok, overtime almost always happens when demand is high.

ConsWhen demand drops, the company drops people FAST. I do not blame them for wanting to keep the most experienced personnel. However, they have become a company full of old men, making a huge gap between them and the rookies, as they keep laying off the latest group to get a couple years under their belt. Don't trust the company executives.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop a blend of people with various experience levels in order to keep a steady flow every year of experienced people that the customers will respect.

Technical Field Representative - Drill Bits

Technical Field Representative - Drill Bits (Current Employee)

I have been working at Baker Hughes full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat name, Decent benefits, Excellent support, Room for advancement, Hard work is recognized, A chance to really make a name for yourself, Excellent fringe benefits, Depending on your location the teamwork can really make work a joy.

Baker is an excellent place to get a start or make a career. They have treated me very fairly, and I believe they treat everybody who is a good hand like they should.

ConsLower pay than most competitors, Life/Work balance can be pretty bad but you know what you're getting in to when you signed up.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize that pay is extremely important to everybody. Most employees realize it's a team environment and it's not "all about the pay," but when the rubber hits the road it will often times come down to that. Otherwise, you're gonna keep losing good employees to competitors.

Intern

Intern (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at Baker Hughes as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe company in many aspects is flexible to the employee. Was given important and enjoyable tasks. People are commitment to academic integrity and growth.

ConsLow profit margin leads to lower salary, less money for projects. In some senses it appeared there was a ceiling you would hit with Baker Hughes fairly quickly.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue funding new projects and stressing safety. Encourage growth of young employees more.
