    I worked at Baker & Taylor full-time

    Pros

Great dental benefits. Flexible hours. Some of the lunches they cater are really good. Free parking, Coworkers are very friendly

    Cons

Management needs to get its act together. You're treated as a throwaway part. Use it until it burns out and then toss it and get another part. No one feels appreciated for what they do.

    Advice to Management

You call yourself a progressive company. I guess that means you recycle paper and people. 6 holidays, no raises, slow earning of PTO do not endear employee loyalty. I watched people required to work weekends and long nights with no "thank you" or anything and when they asked to leave early they were told to use PTO for it. They had 50 hours in that week already and were told to take PTO on a Friday afternoon. And you wonder why people won't stay longer than a year or so.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Well known company looks good on industry resume. Well established, 150+ year old business not likely to be going anywhere. Easy location to access.

    Cons

No raises this fiscal year. Aggressive reach but grossly understaffed, so the pressure is always on. Not competitive in compensation. Not competitive in personal time off. Employee morale is very low, and brain drain has begun.

    Advice to Management

Value your worthy employees, or the best of them will be leaving.

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Somewhat flexible schedule.

    Cons

No incentive for hard work. No pay raises without a promotion or new position. Salaried employees expected to work a minimum of 10 hours OT a week with no additional compensation. Expected to do our jobs along with the jobs of several other departments.

    Advice to Management

Give your people incentives to work. Why would someone want to work hard 50+ hours a week, with the same benefits as someone who works minimum hours and does the minimum required for their jobs? Have more accountability - you shouldn't be required to do someone else's job and not get paid for it, when they don't do theirs but still collect a salary.

    Pros

Some of the people were very nice. Salary was fairly competitive.

    Cons

Overall depressing environment. Perhaps not surprising considering the challenges in their industry.

    Advice to Management

Diversify more. Hire positive, genuinely caring people in upper management. It will trickle down.

    Unreasonable

    Pros

If like working overtime a lot then you will like this job depending on the department also they offer benefits but I think they're expensive

    Cons

Management is full of favoritism. The incentive is near to impossible to earn even if you make amazing production you won't get any incentive if you make a certain amount of errors. PTO is earned but good luck getting a day off you can ask for it and they will just say no. If you are really good at what you do they make it near to impossible for you to transfer departments.. Weekend overtime is mandatory and they hardly ever warn you ahead of time it's always last minute No holiday bonuses. No raises.

    Advice to Management

Be more reasonable when it comes to incentive. Pay more attention to who you put in charge. And make some sort of arrangement so your employees can have their earned days off. Make more opportunities for your employees to advance and if you can't figure out fair incentive consider raises.

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Enjoy working with good people who are passionate about their contributions. Local safety and quality incentives are improving. New management at corporate level may improve promotion opportunity and constructive communication. Allowed to work fairly independently without micro-management---in some areas. Local management is friendly and many managers seem to genuinely care about their employees.

    Cons

High retention means little room for advancement. Few opportunities for personal growth. Low level management entrenched and territorial.

    Advice to Management

Offer additional opportunities for training, increase tuition reimbursement limits. Hold mid and lower level employees to standards of accountability. Reward the front-line employees who are sometimes overlooked.

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Access to free books and CDs. Decent commute if you live on the southside. Fair salary for job requirements.

    Cons

Most workers were previous Wells Fargo employees and apparently they brought their bank mentality with them. Not a friendly social culture. Design and creativity is not valued in comparison to other forward thinking companies. Everyone was nervous about keeping their jobs most of the time.

    Approves of CEO

I worked at Baker & Taylor full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people at B&T are very dedicated. But the company itself is a dinosaur. The book business is struggling with new players and with digital. This company can't keep up.

    Cons

There are a lot of competing factions. A lot of good people, but most are terribly frustrated at the lack of progress and leadership. Really poor benefits structure.

    Pros

People are friendly. Hours are good for parents with children in school.

    Cons

Benefits are expensive, management has their head in the sand (unless you are related or one of their friends), unfair work treatment.

    Advice to Management

Grow up and run this company like a company. Pay competitive rates and get better insurance. Make sure you give 48 hours notice on OT. Treat the employees with respect and compassion. Get management/supervisors to understand that they are not on the top of the "food chain."
