I have been working at Baldwin Wallace University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It's a small institution: close colleagues and friendly administration. You'll wear many hats and have plenty to do (which could also be a con-- with so many projects simultaneously, it can be difficult to make much progress or to have a clean slate to work with). Most students are very engaged.

    Cons

It's a small institution: technology is lacking and web services, while improving over the years, are still leaps and bounds behind in the race. Part-timers beware! Advancement can be quite difficult and/or impossible. Currently a bit of an identity crisis/struggle to find a place in the greater academic circle locally. Lower "competitive" wages than similar academic institutions. In my current position at a similar institution, I'd be making at least 10K more than I do here. For the area, however, it's not bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're making some progress in the areas above, but really, it's 2014 and with a bit of competitive analysis and a clearer set of goals (or maybe a series of consultations with a user experience design firm), you could really make this place shine locally.

Less fuss over aping what other colleges are doing and more focus on finding the niche areas of success within programs here. Accentuate what is working and stop trying to be a 4-year state college on such a limited budget. Improve diversity (people of color, different cultural backgrounds, LGBT, etc.).

Also, greatly in need of a better website and user services. Navigating the various sites is already frustrating and getting what you're looking for doesn't come without additional frustration.

I worked at Baldwin Wallace University

    Pros

This is a small institution, so you will wear many hats and have the opportunity to collaborate across many different departments. View your time here as a learning experience, both in terms of how to do things and how not to do things, and you'll be able to take away lots of important professional lessons.

    Cons

Staff are over-worked, underpaid, and under-appreciated. Many professional staff are mediocre, and more concerned with putting out the immediate fire in front of them and "just getting by" than in preventing future issues. Some entry-level staff see working here as a stepping stone for bigger and better things (and are thus not fully engaged with their community), while others intend to stay at BW for all of their professional career and have little interest in academic or professional innovation. Students engaging, but overcommitted.

Lack of diversity in professional staff, and of support for diversity. Good old boy network.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

BW is struggling to figure out who it is as an institution, and this is negatively impacting the service it provides to students and its ability to support and develop its faculty staff. An aspirational mission statement ceases to become helpful when it detracts from your ability to serve the students who have traditionally been your bread and butter.

There seems to be no ethical accountability for senior staff members. Serious personal, professional, and institutional problems are swept under the rug to preserve BW's friendly community-oriented facade.

I worked at Baldwin Wallace University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of options for work study students.
Coworkers are usually pretty friendly and understanding.

    Cons

The pay for work study students could be better, it has been at minimum wage while other schools will pay a few dollars above minimum wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more appreciative towards student workers.

I have been working at Baldwin Wallace University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work that is at least tangentially related to my field. Steady employment. Limited opportunities to shape change in my department.

    Cons

Under-utilized. Underpaid. No consideration for expanding roles, no opportunities for professional growth. Constant financial limitations for part-timers. Poor morale for part-timers. Massive schism between faculty and part-time staff. Shortsighted endeavors to expand into something more. Archaic approaches to innovation.

I worked at Baldwin Wallace University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Large network of student affairs professionals at all levels. Conveniently located outside but near Cleveland and close to international airport.

    Cons

Hard to balance multiple (required) Graduate Assistantships. Students are not all treated equally based on family ties or good ol' boy relationships.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure to develop all professional staff above graduate assistants as they are role models and mentors.
