I have been working at Balfour Construction full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Encourages growth and building on experiences and relationships. Management seems to take a good interest in development.

    Cons

Structured and had multiple layers of red tape. Not always a time and place for the same structured approach.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep construction personal and a relationship business. It's what separates us from other guys.

I worked at Balfour Construction full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great Health insurance and other benefits.

    Cons

Work life balance is only for those working in the main office. The culture taught by corporate is not passed down to the feet on the ground. Only 50% of the leadership cares about the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many of the employees live by fear and will leave when they have a chance.

    Needs Improvement -Former Employee-Western Region

I worked at Balfour Construction full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good co-workers, fair benefits, fair compensation, use of technology, and BIM.

    Cons

The company's niche was the education sector and lacks experience in other sectors. If you have expertise in healthcare, waste water this is not the place for you because the western San Diego office does not have expertise in these sectors. If they want to hire you for the expertise do not budge on salary requirements and expect long hours, no work life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Western Region Executive Management are legacy employees that do not have leadership qualities and lacks forward thinking and are only in place due to international company BB purchase. Management talks about collaborative environment and care for employees but does not treat their employees that way and needs to make improvements in that area.

I have been working at Balfour Construction full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company as a whole is progressive. The company as whole embraces technology, new ideas, training, etc. Large international company that has a culture of thinking out of the box and being innovative.

    Cons

Understand this negative review is for the Western region only. No work/life balance -- no overtime. All salaried employees are exempt -- even low paying jobs. The western region is made up of two very small companies that were acquired in the past 10 years. They do not collaborate and are highly competitive -- each thinks they are better than the other. What does that mean to the employees? Lack of respect for management. Many of the legacy employees have "big" titles but not the education or experience to fill the shoes of those titles. It is a good old boys club. I have actually heard them say "we should have this person (female) to participate in interviews and we can show how diverse we are". Unfortunately they are hiring many experienced employees who only become frustrated because of the leaderships lack of knowledge and experience. They talk about collaboration, communication, etc. -- but don't practice these behaviors. My hope has been that things would change. I don’t see that happening until they move some people out of executive positions and move execs that know the area and have the contacts into those positions. This is only for the Western Region – it is the blind leading the knowledgeable and not open to learning and sharing information. People have used my ideas and taken credit for them. That’s just sad on so many levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being afraid that someone may know something more than you -- that's what collaboration is -- sharing information to create innovative projects, processes, procedures, etc. Most of you have not worked for a large international company -- be open to the experience. It's a great ride. Stop treating women as though they are all administrative assistants. Also stop having a double-standards.
