Doesn't reward talent and a lot of furniture - IT Department

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Lafayette, CO

I have been working at Ball Aerospace full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFast pasted and new technology. Ball Aerospace builds some very impressive things and the facilities are pretty neat. The offices are pretty nice and the people are mostly nice. The benefits are nice and they allow you to have a life outside of work.

ConsManagers don't involve anyone in the IT department in designs and the architect is clueless. The IT architect hasn't had one good design and there is no accountability for him. Luckily they have a few smart motivated people in IT that make bad designs work. The compensation is about average but don't believe that if you have a lot of certifications and large projects under your belt will mean you'll be compensated fairly. What I mean by a lot of furniture is that there are a lot of people not doing much and don't know anything. Their "Senior" and above engineers/administrators are mostly clueless and very incompetent. They are only at that position because they've been around for a while. This is a place to put your skills on the shelf and wait for retirement.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider fair compensation, include memebers in design, hold people accountable, and actually fight for your employees.

Great projects but not so good IT support or management

Engineer (Current Employee)
Albuquerque, NM

I have been working at Ball Aerospace full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThe challenge and interesting nature of some of the projects are hard to beat. 401k/match, pension plan. Health care is pretty good. Great place to start out your career. Get to work with and learn a LOT from other experienced employees. Salary is very competitive. 2-week flex time.

ConsFor a high tech company who can make satellites, fix the Hubble Telescope, etc. Ball has some of THE worst IT support. Be prepared to use computers and technology from the 90s to get your job done. When working in a small group it IS and WILL be impossible to get promoted. Management seems to care more about time sheets rather than actual work. You will have to deal with your client's own policies and procedures, which can be ludicrous at times. Training is really lacking and am starting to feel very behind in the industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit treating SES like a third party to Ball Aerospace. If you want to be an employer of choice and retain employees Ball is going to have to stop being so cheap. For example. Maxing out vacation after four weeks, come on. Complaining to employees that use sick time and really need it since it comes out of profits. I'm scared to take sick time because of that. Centralized purchasing and regulations just slows things down from hours to weeks. Lack of communication with respect to the bad things happening at Ball -- people getting laid off, losing contracts, etc.

Fast paced, challenging, and rewarding

Supply Chain (Current Employee)
Boulder, CO

I have been working at Ball Aerospace full-time for more than 3 years

Pros--ESPP, Pension, 401k match, competitive pay, tuition reimbursement, 3wks vacation to start, unlimited sick (within reason), etc.
--Steep learning curve, both challenging and rewarding. Lots of autonomy and ability to manage your desk as you see fit.
--Opportunities are available if you actively seek them out. Career pathing is available, but is dependent on the individual to initiate and continue the conversation.
--Different environment and workload day-to-day. Job is ever-evolving, keeping it fresh and rewarding.

Cons--Expensive high deductible health plan & HSA (some might like this)
--Lack of mentor/protege and basic job training, relying on sink-or-swim mentality and learning through somewhat critical errors and mistakes.
--Career pathing may be more difficult depending on your manager--some do not have the skillset or management skills to properly assess or assist.
--Although the pay is competitve, there is a perception that you may need to leave and come back in order to have experience and education fully recognized if current accomplishments are Ball specific.
--Internal workings are somehwat convoluted due to the matrix system in place. Who reports to who? Who is accountable for who?

Advice to Senior ManagementA formalized leadership & mentor/protege program would be good, along with future leader development and curriculum. Right now it depends on your manager, and like any large corporation, some managers are only in place because they've been there a long time--not because they a proper management/leadership material. Career pathing is weak if you don't seek it out yourself, so would also be considered an opportunity for improvement.

Overall a great place to work with relatively minor shortcomings depending on how you approach and address them.

Good old boys club creates good salaries for others.

Manager (Current Employee)
Boulder, CO

I have been working at Ball Aerospace full-time for more than 8 years

ProsVery competitive salaries, great benefits (including a pension) and a host of appreciation events create an environment that is difficult to leave once you have been there awhile.

ConsTo advance most employees leave and then come back. Ball does not seem to value long-term employees. The grass apparently IS greener on the other side.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be so conflict averse. Instead of promoting employees who never ruffle a feather promote those who hold others appropriately accountable. A manager shouldn't have to be afraid of their own shadow. Not sure how this got imbedded into the culture but there is definitely a large faction of managers who do not hold employees accountable. It was the top complaint on the last employee satisfaction survey.

Not what it once was

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Ball Aerospace full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGood compensation package and competitive benefits, still have some good programs to work, though the opportunities are a shadow of what they used to be.

ConsUsed to be a culture that took an active interest in trying to positively challenge employees - now there's confusion about priorities, ownership and decision authority.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to re-create a management culture that values subordinates and reaches out to them, cultivating energy, innovation and good will as a priority.

Watch out for long time employees in positions of power

Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
Boulder, CO

I have been working at Ball Aerospace full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood culture, good people company, location, interesting work, industry reputation

ConsLong time employees work their way up, almost by accident, without the necessary skill set or education. Company is not good at removing toxic managers. Old boys club. Hard to work your way up with skills alone. Need a well placed mentor.

Advice to Senior ManagementLose toxic employees in positions of power
