    Pros

We get a 50% discount. Co-workers are cool.

    Cons

This used to be a place where scheduling was very flexible. The company recently implemented a system where they send schedules out 3 weeks in advance, and now we no longer have any time to plan anything outside of work because we seem to be getting a new schedule every damn day. There are a lot more call outs as a result. If you work here, do yourself a favor and try to get in as a cashier. You will have the easiest job and the only opportunity for a little promotion to cash lead. Everyone else in the store is constantly given more responsibilities without the title and compensation to match. Exlcluding a few, management is made up of people who received their jobs not through talent and business savvy, but through connections made by making friends with the right person. Therefore, you end up with a management team that is completely unsupportive when it comes to development and who will even stop any progress you might be making on your own. Yes, they are that petty. You will work hard, put in 40 hours a week (even though your part time), work overnight, stay past your shift, work on your day off and do everything you can to make a positive contribution to the success of your store, and be told that you can't be promoted because you don't smile enough. My advice: take what you learn here and get a job at another retailer that will be more than willing to pay you above average for what you do. This should really only be a side job.

    Advice to Management

Promotions should be based on merit, rather than "hook-ups". Associates who are expected to fill every role should be paid more for their expertise.

I have been working at Banana Republic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Designers aren't required to work extremely long hours on most days.

    Cons

BR is not diverse when it comes to hiring. They will hire, people of color for freelance positions, but never full-time permanent positions. Several African American freelancers have worked at Banana Republic for over 2 years in the hopes of being hired fulltime. Yet, not single African American Designer works at Banana Republic. They also don't hire many American citizens either. Out of the entire Menswear Design Team only 3 are American and they tend to have the lowest positions. 75% of the Designers are from the UK . 3 out of 4 of the highest design positions are given to designers from the UK.

    Advice to Management

For a company that prides itself on diversity you should have better hiring practices. It is false advertising to label Banana Republic an "American Sportswear" company.

  6. My experience in Banana Republic was a negative one. Starting with the managers who were incredibly unprofessional.

I worked at Banana Republic (Less than a year)

    Pros

The only pros was the discount but even then it wasn't that much, 30%?

    Cons

No benefits offered for part time. They asked you to work just under full time employees and had the same expectations.

    Advice to Management

Keep your personal life to yourself. Be considerate of others personal beliefs and practices. Train your employees and give chances to advance.

    Pros

Discount on the clothes is good. A variety of customers to meet.

    Cons

Lack of technology to support the sales staff in their work so there's a lot of needless effort both on the sales floor and in the office. Many managers do not have inspiring personalities. Compensation ($10/hr) is below some other retailers for more work. Each week the schedule is different so, while you can ask for days off, predictability of specific work hours is not assured.

    Advice to Management

Treat the employees like you expect them to treat the customers. Make it so employees can simply do their job by upgrading technology on the sales floor and behind the scenes.

    Pros

The people there are easy to work with until managers promise a promotion then it's kind of a dog eat dog environment

    Cons

The long hours. They do not accommodate with your school schedule and management takes the retail side too seriously. Lots of favoritism

    Advice to Management

Start to understand that you hire many students so if we can't make a shift it isn't by choice

I have been working at Banana Republic part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - great job for people in high school (who don't need to pay rent) - great job for people who like extremely sterile, corporate enviornment.

    Cons

    - Not a realistic job for anyone looking for a STABLE work enviornment. - Hours fluctuate with the stores tightly watched payroll - Employees are only given more hours when the store has an abudance of payroll time to be used, or if said employee is able to sell a Credit Card at high volumes. - If the employee finds a steady position as stock, or sales support their hours are extremely unstable. Since the employee doesn't have opportunities to sell credit cards, the management doesn't see the "magic credit card number" next to their name when they're doing the schedule, and thus, they're the first whose hours are to be cut. Regardless of if you're the best support/stock team member they have who can get triple the work done of a credit card selling employee, or manager. Leadership hours are always at 40 for the week, there are always two, if not three, hourly paid leadership members who suck up most of the payroll and on top of all this, get managerial bonuses if the store meets certain figures each month.

    Advice to Management

Focus on employee development and elevating employees so that they can be future managers and leaders throughout the Gap Inc.
