  1. Great team, great product

    I worked at Banana Republic

    Pros

Besides the perks and discounts of all stores under Gap Inc., my time at Banana Republic was very productive and I learned a lot about the retail business. As an employee, I gained humility towards the client and my creativity was expanded immensely. I became even more comfortable with face to face sales and my fellow team members showed me respect and constant support.

    Cons

The main down side I had with this company was the fact that it was retail. Within a year, I found myself getting bored with the day to day operations. Besides the differentiation in prices and promotions, not much changed in the work environment. On top of that, employees have to be standing at all times (except for breaks of course). Not that standing and walking around is very hard, but to be in formal clothing for 5-8 hours and not being able to sit for more than about 10-15 minutes puts a lot of pressure on the joints. Other than this though, there were minimal negatives to working here.

I have been working at Banana Republic full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Love the discount; the direction of the brand..

    Cons

Pay isn't that great.. I mean for me; I'm 20 and I live with my parents, so it's good enough to pay for things I want.. But it wouldn't be good enough for someone with more experience..

I worked at Banana Republic part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount, physical environment, great if you want to work a min of inconsistent hours.

    Cons

Minimum and inconsistent number of hours, favoritism, pushing credit card ridiculousness, floor managers who push sales in your headphones while you're supposed to interact with customers, endless waits for purse checks, coworkers who push their go-backs onto you and lousy increase percentage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop favoritism, do purse checks within just a few minutes, don't micro-manage and pay attention to who is getting away with what.

I worked at Banana Republic full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Meeting some amazing people. If you're afraid of public speaking or talking with strangers, this job will definitely help with that. 50% discount is nice.

    Cons

Depending on your store, the sales pressure can be stressful. I worked at both a high traffic store and sales came easy. Of course the pressure to open credit cards is always there but again it is easier at a high traffic store. High turnover is common.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out a way to reduce the sales pressure on employees, store managers and district managers. Yes credit cards gets BR money and yes the training says we are never to pressure customers to open credit cards. However we are pressured to open a certain number of cards and it is competitive. If you wish to be on the top, you have to be pushy.

I have been working at Banana Republic part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The discount throughout Gap companies is a nice perk, i.e. Banana Republic, Gap, and Old Navy. Another pro is the increase in wage for employees across all brands.

    Cons

The emphasis on the credit cards is absurd and there is little incentive offered for doing well. Outside of that, there should be more opportunities for advancement, and the GM should be more involved in daily aspects of the store to assure success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be improvements made between the communication with management and employees. Another suggestion is to comply with the agreed upon availability of employees.
