I have been working at Banana Republic part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fun environment, good training for retail business. Excellent standards. You have the possible of training for management. Good employee discounts across the brands, Gap and Old Navy. Flexible shifts.

    Cons

You only get hours when the store takes money. Schedules state lots of on calls. Shifts can be cancelled at any given time. Employ new people, even though there are no hours to spare. Make you work most holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train employees thoroughly, from the beginning of training. Retrain if necessary. Buddy up new hires with strong trained employees.

    Pros

    - Friendly, Professional work environment
    - Very flexible with hours, perfect job for Students
    - Great Discount
    - Good starting pay

    Cons

    - Full Time positions are not easy to come by
    - While the pay is great for those living with parents or in dorms, you can't make a living off of it
    - At larger stores, the abundance of leaders will cause management to butt heads. You step on someone elses toes when doing what you're told to.

I worked at Banana Republic part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Gap,Inc really is a neat company which sells quality products in their higher end stores such as Banana Republic. It trains its staff very well and promotes a climate of workplace happiness.

    Cons

Like many retail operations ,they over- stress the "awesomeness"of working there and "being a part of the team" , the generous discount, while never wanting to acknowledge that the pay is often substantially less than other retail stores and that they essentially want you to LIVE for Banana Republic. Work life BALANCE IS NON EXISTANT.

I worked at Banana Republic part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They try to be as flexible as possible with scheduling and requesting days off but it's retail and they make a lot of the money on the weekends so you will have to work most. The discount is very generous: 50% off at BR and the Gap, 30% at Old Navy and 20% on Piperlime (occasionally). The bonus structure is nice: if the store makes or exceeds the target sales goal for the month you can get and extra $25-$200 in your paycheck depending on how many hours you worked for the month.

    Cons

They don't pay much and your raise will be $0.05 to $0.10 every 6 months. The store carries a lot of inventory so the sales floor and stock rooms are messy. They harass employees about opening credit cards. The sales floor constantly changes so it is hard to remember where items are on the sales floor. There are no opportunities for advancement to manager within the store and no opportunities to move to corporate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify talent in the store and promote from within. It would be nice if corporate positions were posted in the store since most of the associates are college seniors and graduate students and may not mind relocating.

Not a Bad Option for College Students

I worked at Banana Republic part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Hours are generally flexible, it is not hard to get time off as long as you have a good relation with the managers. They were always super flexible with my college class schedule.
    - Learn good customer service skills, sales skills and teamwork.
-Usually all young people in college or in 20s who work there, I hung out with a lot of my coworkers outside of work. Very social job, sometimes the people you work with are all that get you through a slow day.
-50 percent of discount at all Banana Republics and Gaps. 25 percent off Old Navy, 30 percent off the Outlet stores.
    - Really easy labor-wise, mostly helping customers or on cash register. Some slow days you literally are getting paid to walk around the store and do nothing, or at least find a way to kill 6 hours.

    Cons

    - Not a lot of pay raises once you start working there. I worked there for 4 years only got two raises.
    - Can be extremely boring.
    - If you work stock or visuals there are a lot of overnight shifts, when someone from corporate comes to the store there are often overnights to make sure the store looks perfect.
    - High turnover rate, especially during the Holidays. They rarely fired people in my time there but people often left because they weren't getting raises or were just bored. Holidays bring in seasonal workers, only a few of them are kept but a lot of them are "B squad" material anyway.
    - Most of the managers are cool, but there are always the ones who are ball busters and try to micromanage people. Working shifts with the bad managers can be nightmares on a lot of levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't try to micromanage employees. The friendly managers tend to get the best effort and hard work from the staff.
