Pros
Working within a second tier bank the size of Bankwest allows you to be heard and not drown in bureaucracy. You still have the benefit of CBA as a parent company so if you are on a strong career path and are willing to more to Sydney the option is there. Perth is a sunny relaxed city so a good option if you are escaping gloomy weather somewhere else in the world (London perhaps?).
Cons
Sometimes the wrong voices are heard and things go a little down the wrong track. As there is a flatter structure you may need to start playing the political games a little earlier. Some might see that as a benefit?
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to all parts of the bank when drawing together strategy.
Pros
Great culture within the team I worked, undergoing significant change - which had its positives and negatives. I worked in a great team with a great leader who was values-driven and put people first.
Cons
Broader culture could be aggressive and not always collaborative. Due to the changes, it increased internal competition for resources and jobs. However, management were open to new ideas and being innovative.
Advice to Senior Management
It has been some time since I've worked at BankWest and it continues to undergo significant change, particularly with the GFC. Based on my experience, a returned to the values based reward and recognition program would be beneficial.
Pros
The culture is highly dynamic and visibility is high with senior management so every employee has a voice. If you want to make changes to a process, managers listen and let you run with great ideas. The people are awesome, and all working towards a common goal of making Bankwest a successful business to rival the other Aussie banks.
My manager is so understanding and flexible, really hands off, and really respects my contribution to the team.
Cons
Media speculation has been frustrating in the past.
