    BSA better than most

    PRN (Former Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

ProsExcellent benefits, mostly excellent working conditions, except when under construction. Everyone really friendly and helpful to show new people around the huge hospital.

ConsNot everyone treated with the same respect.

Advice to Senior ManagementBringing in senior management / VPs / doctors that had not worked at BSA before or had not lived in West Texas was a challenge since they do not understand the West Texas culture. They need to be reminded everyone in Amarillo is related some way or another. Treat everyone with respect.

Good co-workers, but overall poor mid-level management and worse C level management.

    Registered Nurse (Current Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

ProsYou feel like you truly make a difference in the community.

ConsOverall lack of employee satisfaction due to poor management, poor benefits and salaries that are not competitive.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider holding directors and managers accountable. There is no reason to have employees fill out surveys if nothing is to be done about poor performance/poor attitude of the leadership.
You get what you pay for. Many managers/directors only hold a 2 year degree and have not been encouraged to gain more knowledge.

    BSA in Amarillo

    Registered Nurse (Current Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

    ProsVery supportive and positive environment.

ConsCompensation for Nurses is below the national average. There was recently a raise freeze.

Advice to Senior ManagementBSA is losing some wonderful and knowledgable employees due to low compensation packages offered. They should pay much more.

    Good place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

ProsGood pay, nice hospital, best hospital to work for in this area. My supervisor and manager are fair and care about their employees.

ConsBonus and raises have been frozen for employees while executive pay continues to be extremely high. 401a has been suspended, also.

Advice to Senior ManagementReinstate raises as soon as possible! Lower the price of food in the cafeteria for employees - it has gotten much higher.

If you like the good ole gal system, you'll love it

    RN, Emergency Room (Former Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

    ProsGrowing hospital
Nice co-workers who do their best in a tough situation

ConsPromotions given not based on excellent patient care - but who your girlfriends are...
Five different ER unit directors in as many years
Will not get rid of slow or incompetent RNs - just move them to plum desk jobs
ER design looked like a prison setting
Since only two hospitals in town - not enough competition to stir competitive wages for RNs - their attitude is take it or leave it.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire experienced talented RNs and PAY them. Design an ER that is staff-friendly with a good-sized break room.

    BSA

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

ProsMy co-workers are very kind and easy to get along with.

ConsNot financially stable. Third round of layoffs in a year were announced today. We are all already under a salary freeze.

Advice to Senior ManagementControl the spending in the good times as well as the bad. Then you won't have to lay people off during the rough spots and there will always be rough spots.

You really need to think about the vision of BSA--know nurses, know patients; no nurses, no patients, no money.

    Registered Nurse (Current Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

ProsThe people I work with are the best

ConsBenefits are getting worse. Staffing issues are are now becoming safety issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut more nurses on the floor on all shifts. Start thinking about the liabilities of short staffing.
