I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Depending on the team you are in and the projects that you work on, you can end up working with some very smart people

    Cons

There is very little effort put in to retaining talented staff. Constant cutting and non replacement of staff puts a lot of extra load on remaining colleagues. This place is not a meritocracy any more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look after your staff better. Toxic cultures are very hard to fix once they have taken hold.

    Pros

Training is good and intelligent people on the ground floor

    Cons

Poor morale, bad management decisions and uncompetitive salaries if you stay working here and don't move in and out of the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

change for the sake of change is not good. think less about ticking boxes and look more about the consequences of changes and decisions that are made.

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Most of the people are friendly and its an okay work atmosphere (not great, not terrible).
Most senior managers will take the time for you.

    Cons

    Training is basically non-existent.
There are major budget and headcount constraints in the Investment Bank.
The Investment Bank is losing major talent (for whatever the reason).

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

great salary, some individuals were great people to work with health care package great all-round benefits

    Cons

insulated cliques, not that diverse, lots of glass ceilings

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at your staff diversity, listen to staff who have complaints or issues, it could help to change your reputation in the city and retain valuable staff who wish to contribute to the company.

I have been working at Barclays Capital

    Pros

A lot of the people have been helpful and approachable plus the benefits schemes are pretty good.

    Cons

A lot of processes, which are already mature in other companies are barely there and it can take a very long time to get things done.
There are quite a few employees in senior positions, who can't deal with day to day tasks and lack basic knowledge in their area of expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out the massive layer of junior directors - a lot of them don't have any reports and their job could be done but much more junior colleagues.

Great people but morale is down, and strategic direction unclear.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Friendly, intelligent people (depending on your team)
Decent internship and graduate training programme
Work/life balance reasonable/better than other places (at least in sales)
Brand name still good to have on the CV

    Cons

    - Low morale on trading floors due to constant cuts and voluntary departures.
    - Lack of communication from upper mgmt and no clear strategic direction
    - Grads have no chance to try placements on different desks and are dropped onto a team that needs headcount with very little regard to his or her professional interests. It is not easy to move teams. If you are a markets intern at Barclays, be very careful which desks you are courting and find out how things are really going for them.
    - Compliance and internal approval processes for anything and everything have become far more stringent and time consuming than they are at other banks (from what I've heard). Not a bad thing per se, but it makes the work very tedious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give graduates a formal option to try working on different desks.

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time

    Pros

Hard to find. But there are very smart people somewhere there. They are constantly trying to hide from HR and senior management.

    Cons

    HR service is really bad.
Compensation is lowest in the market.
They are firing people at will.
    Bureaucracy is overwhelming.
This is simply the worst place I have ever worked.

    Pros

Not sure...just like any other work place with politics

    Cons

    Poor management skills within staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your staff to be able to manage people and just not shove people under poor management skills...you will get disgruntled staff.
